Here are some pix of the origional collars after being removed from the cables. 4shorts, 3rrl, and myself are working on ideas for fabricating new collars in the lengths needed for the cables to operate properly.

Something else I need to figure out, is how do you measure rollpins for proper sizing? I have one which is broken in one of the controls and the manuals do not break down the parts far enough to give descriptions of the rollpins. I will have to measure either another rollpin or one of the holes to determine the proper diameter. Also, as these were made in England, do rollpins come in metric sizes as well as inch measurements?

How should I go about cleaning this before regreasing? Also, what type and how much grease whould I use?

I second KennyD's suggestion of mineral spirits and synthetic grease or cable lube, or I like naphtha since it doesn't leave a light oily film like mineral spirits do.

McMaster-Carr www.mcmaster.com carries metric roll pins (a.k.a. tension pins). The nominal pin diameter is the hole diameter, therefore specify the pin by the hole diameter when you buy them.

I look forward to seeing what you, Paul and Rob come up with.

I think I managed to track down the current owners of the company who origionally made the control unit. Morse Cable | Control Cables I eventually plan to contact them, but for now, I'm going with the quick fix.

I'm currently working with Rob (3rrl) and we are looking at just making what I need. I sent one of the pieces to him Monday. I should get some feedback from him shortly.

Work has picked up some and it's been nice taking a mental break from the tractor this week. Hasn't hurt the budget either. I need to go up to the Deere dealer tomorrow as my $85 filter is in for the mower. I still can't believe that the return filter is $85. Ouch. I need to pay for the 15gallons of fluid I got last week too. It's nice having an account at the dealer, but I need to limit myself and spread out the costs. Later next week, I'll look at getting a mount for the controls made.

I heard from Rob (3rrl) today. He doesn't think he'll have any problems milling up new collars. The only issue right now is identifing the correct thread. He thinks he'll have the first one done for me to test around the end of next week. Once we confirm that it works correctly, he'll tap the rest and mail them.

We had an unusually warm and sunny day today. I couldn't resist trying out the mower even though I don't have any controls yet. I operated the valves manually and set the mower to a specific point and started the flail head, then got on the tractor and began mowing. Three passes with the mower set defferently on each pass. Not bad for no controls and old RUSTED knives. Here are a couple pix of the result. The brush was nearly to the wheel track when I started.

That's good that you tested it so you can find out if the mower has other issues besides control cables. From your pictures, I'd say once you get the control cables worked out you'll be good to go.
