My Barn..... Finally !!!

Ok, can't help kibitzing. A couple of things to consider:

1. Penetration points for power, drains (a sink is a god send), outdoor power, water faucet. I made one entry point in the floor (just a wood frame to block the concrete and backfilled with gravel when I got the water run). I wished I had done that around the pre-placed electrical conduit. Underground kept the metal from being penetrated.

2. Presuming this will be metal sided, there are preformed foam 'rubber' pieces for the ends of the panels (and the wll to roof joints). Make it a LOT tighter.

3. Cut floor crack joints. Same thing they do to concrete freeways. Is amazing in how much easier it is to use your shop floor when moving or setting up equipment. Or a creeper. You can pour the flat work later, allowing you to finish the penetration points and to set aside a bit more money.

4. Don't know what kind of doors you are using. Mine has side sliders (conventional barn doors). Other than the issue that the full height has to open, they are simple, and they are cheaper (a place money can be diverted from). No auto door openers though. And no overhead space issues (space the door opens to). I also agree on the door opening -- 9' is too small.

5. The easy directions to add space are to either just extend the roof out (in your case only the side without the doors) or to extend off of the end. Just a thought if you have any pretensions for the future.

6. For you wood shop, if you can think this in advance, it can be a real plus to have a small door that allows long timbers to stick out of your shop along the path your chop/radial saw and bench would be. Just a 2' x 2' or less door with the bottom at the same level as the work surface (even if it does not extend to the wall/opening). Amplifies your space with little impact to your work area by being able to leave the part not being used outside, but accessible from the inside.

7. No one will ever build the perfect shop -- just get closer to the mythical Nirvana. There's nothing like a Man's new shop -- Manland! Congrats!

I just finished my barn/shop and have 1 12ft door at one end and 1 10ft door at the other end sure wish I had made both 12ft. You must be very streight to pull or back a trailer in the 10ft door. My doors are swing doors I made using 2x2 tubing with 5 regular 4 1/2 in hinges on the doors the doors but the drop out for the tin which makes a good fit. 2 doors in each opening 10 ft tall. When I learn how to send pictures I will send some. These doors are real cheep and easy to make.

Sounds like you have put a great deal of thought into what you want. Everyone has great ideas, but we all have to know where to draw the line. Mine is close to being done and I guess there are always things I might have done different. That is why you never build the final garage. There may always be another down the road. Good Luck and I look forward to seeing your shop become an actual building. I tried to save money, but in the end you can save on big items. The little items are what really cost in the end. I spent $300-400 just on sealant for the concrete.

Good Afternoon hc,
Well I got the invoice in the mail today from MacLeod's Lumber, they are out of Whtehall, Ny.

The total bill for all the lumber, trusses, and associated material came out to $16,213.39.

I am prepaying for all the lumber so as not to incurr any further price increases over the next couple of months.

Unfortunately the trusses are on there way allready, and we will only be doing the bulldozer work this weekend..... :(

Hopefully the slab will be done by next weekend weather permitting, so those trusses are not laying around too long...

Im hopefull to have some dozer pics by this sunday or monday, and will post as soon as I can ! :)

So to date I have $21, 213 payed out and not a blade of grass moved yet:confused2:

I will keep you all updated !

BTW if I had Robs money, thats my buddy 3RRL, the barn would be much bigger and done allready ! :p

Scotty, congratulations on getting your barn started. Have you considered adding some duct work under the slab for a dust collection system in the wood shop? They sure are nice if you do much wood working. Not to expensive to do now and almost impossible to do later. You might also add a small slab outside the building that could be closed in to hold a compressor and dust collector. Eliminating those items from the interior makes for a much quieter man cave as you contemplate life.

Good Evenin Guys,
Scott your allways welcome, beer and food provided !

Mark and Jimmy, thanks !

The tough dozer work is done, here are a couple of shots, sorry not so great ! :(

I will have two large truck loads of gravel brought in for the base and two loads of crushed shale for the bank that sticks out and for the ramp into the garage section...

We did make a small change, the drive through bay will be the second door over and thats where my floor drain will be...

I will have some dozer shots tommorrow... :)

The base will be vibratory compacted, hopefully things wont move too much after that ! :)

Also the bottom sill plate that contavts the concrete will be PT and J bolted to the concrete...

Gotta go and take Mom out will be back later...;)
