are you saying the seal on the pto stub turns with the stub?

odd.. I'm surprised it's not an oil seal and internally lubed.. I'd think a dust seal would be felt if it was external.

oh well.. whatever their engineers found that works... if it works.. it works..

a good way to check bearing play is to see if the pto stub has any in/out or side to side movement.

it's bearing play that usually causes early seal failure.

When I was 16 I was out mowing our yard in my Bikini and the people 3 doors down were on vaction for 2 weeks and left grandma to watch their 3 kids. She asked me if I would cut it for a little money. I said ok. They were all sitting there watching me mow and I was going around this med sized bush kinda close. Some how my Bikini top caught on the right limb and off it went just like that. I mean It wasnt just hanging down, it was gone. I was sitting there with no top trying to cover up with my arms and look around. I couldnt see it so I got up. The kids came running down and were right on top of me, all boys. The Grandma found it and I ran inside their house and shut the door so I could put the top on without making more of a scene. hehe I still think about that today, and Im sure I could have went around that bush a hundred times and couldnt do that again if I tried. One things for sure though, those 3 boys became men that day.

Its funny, those boys became men that day but I've seen many men instantly become boys over such things too.

It didn't happen to me, but my father in law was using his new JD425, you know the ones with the forward and reverse pedals side by side. He was mowing an island in our eight acre pond; just loved that carefully crafted island and his new JD.

I am not sure exactly what happened, but apparently he went right up to the edge, got distracted and took his foot off the HST. It started to roll forward towards the pond, so he pushed down on what he thought was reverse and it lurched forward into ten feet of water. As an old sailor he had no problem abandoning ship and swimming to shore, but the JD went to the bottom pretty quick.

He had one of my sons swim down and hook a chain to it and we lifted it out; new instrument panel, new engine, but that darned thing has never been the same.

To the day he died he swore he pushed on the "right" pedal.

We won't even talk about what happened when he tried to pull a Case out of a different pond with an GMC Sonoma.

Funny how we talk about other peoples problems but rarely speak of our own.:D

It was not meant to be disparaging. You would have to know my father in law to fully appreciate the stories as his exploits are told and retold at family gatherings with great fondness and lots of laughter. Everyone has a favorite story.

Now I don't have any embarrassing tractor moments, but how many people do you know who had to shoot a tree down with a .45 ACP when it got hung up and it was too iffy to get close to with a saw. There was also the time "someone" didn't put the plug in the bass boat/unhook tie downs, got stranded in the woods on an ATV and walked home to get help and tools only to discover the "kill switch" had been moved when dismounting; well you get the idea:eek:

Geez, this is like confessional or something....

I was loading my backhoe onto my 16'+3 equipment trailer, which was connected to my Dodge dually. The whole rig was on a hill.

I stalled the backhoe just as I got the front tires on the trailer. The rear tires were still on the ground. The stalling motion rocked the trailer, which caused the trailer ramps to fold up.

The weight of the backhoe lifted the rear of my dually off the ground. With me still sitting on my BH, the truck, trailer, the backhoe and I went for a nice ride down the driveway, across a state road, and into a farmer's field across the street. Fortunately, the rig didn't jack knife. Moreoever, I wasn't killed. Lesson learned!

Yee-haw! And thank you Jesus!

that's why I always crib the center rear of my trailer when loading.. plus using a paring brake and wheel chok ( 4x4 piece.. )
