They have a minor problem with a frilly option. Unfortunately, a replacement solution is not available to them. Disable the feature, reimburse the customer the value of the option and move onto a better design and alternate vendor. I don't see reason for the uproar.:confused2:

I'm surprised they went with a vender that was teetering on the edge of oblivion. I wouldn't want a parts supplier to vehicles I sold to be living that close to the edge.

what next? major engine component from a fly by night supplier? then just pay you 'insuracnce company' value for your car? I'd be surprised if another option to replace it wasn't available, though from a financial standpoint.. I bet it would cost them more thant he 100$ plus dealer service fee to do the duty.

I expect nothing less from GM though.. I have one... makes me think fiat wasn't so bad after all.. :)

as of right now, I currently own my last GM product......
Until the government and the union gets out of ownership of a once great company, I will look towards Ford or even an import before I would even consider going back

The Explorer debacle was the worst I remember. The Toyota one was probably just as bad. People dying because of corporate greed....:(

Don't forget the Ford Firebomb (a.k.a. Pinto/Bobcat) and the bean-counters told engineering to skip the then $5 plastic fuel tank shield.

It is a different playing field out there and for those of us that grew up in the 50's and still play by those rules have a hard time with the new America.

I'm not sure I like this 'Brave new world' we live in.

Yeah, but the coffee maker is made in China. GM is trying to attain their level of quality first!

Trying to attain it?! Heck they taught the Chinese how to make junk via the Chevette, Vega, S-10 pickup/Blazer, 2.8l V6 engine, gas to diesel conversion, peeling paint issues that date back to the 80's, and I'm sure I've forgotten a few other gems from them.

The most horrific Ford defect of all was the exploding fuel tank on the crown Victoria. Police would pull their car off the side of the road. Unattentive drivers will rear-end the police car. The C/V has an unprotected fuel tank that smashes into the rear axle and explodes usually killing the police officer.

Ford corporate representative Brian Geraghty has admitted under oath that the Crown Victorias' record is among the worst when it comes to protecting police and their passengers from being incinerated.

Article with Ford's response to 26 deaths from Crown Vic exploding tank (including 12 police officers):
http://www.safetyforum.com/cvpi/

Maybe someone should post up a warning about the Crown Vic in the trailers & transportation forums, too so our members might see the warning and avoid this model so they don't get incinerated to death if they get rear ended????? Seems a lot more serious that a heated ww tank wire.
I believe it would be a great service of this website to sticky all dangerous vehicle problems at the top of the forum, like the Ford Explorer rollover issues, Ford crown vic exploding tank issues, Toyota fuel pedal sticking, etc.

While I don't want to downplay the GM recall, if you read the article, there's been a whopping 5 fires reported in 1.4 million affected vehicles. That's less than .00001% of their vehicles. No injuries, crashes or deaths.

"GM said it was aware of five fires but there had been no injuries or crashes reported. Nearly 1.4 million vehicles are in the U.S. and more than 100,000 vehicles are in Canada, Mexico and other international markets.
"While our analysis shows the number of incidents is very small compared with the number of vehicles on the road, we want our customers to have complete peace of mind," said Jeff Boyer, GM's executive director of safety."

GM reports there's no more suppliers to buy a replacement wire harness from. They're offering to disable the feature and compensate the customer $100. While I don't like the compansation part, this hardly seems like it's been anything compared to some safety defects of other manufacturers. If there's nobody left making the wire harness, what are they supposed to do?

We have a winner. The one and only exception it they were probably a great company before GM ran them into the ground, not that they were "fly by night".

How about make it themselves or source a supplier that can? Like you said it all comes down to $$$$ just like with the other manufactures and there defects.

The big issue here is it sets up a presidence for all manufactures just like Soundguy expressed a few post back.

Seriously? They are an automotive manufacturer. They manufacture automotive parts.

They made a business decision, and It was to take the cheapest way out.

If it was going to cost them a huge bundle of money to correct the problem, potentially, I could agree with them. But, from a moral, and customer goodwill standpoint, (an area they are currently severely lacking in, hence their declining market share), they owe these people a fix.

I don't wish to see GM fold, only because I don't want to see people lose their jobs. (Chrysler on the other hand...bah bye.:D) If GM ever wants to get back on top, this kind of approach, is not going to get them there.

Actually, no, they used to be, back in the old, old days of yore.

Now they merely design, buy parts from contract suppliers and assemble. The amount of "in house" manufactured parts is minuscule. AC/Delco is gone with the wind. Part of the reason GM only employs a small fraction of workers they once did.
