Thanks Mark.

If I were to add any kind of stiffeners/stringers to help reinforce the bottom, what would suggest? I'd thought maybe some kind of C-channel.

Thoughts?

Thanks again

Under the bottom, channel would be fine, but if you are going to reinforce it internally, simple angle iron laid flat so that both edges making contact, sort of completing a triangle, then that should be adequate and self cleaning.

I like your idea better than mine, Mark.

Yours keeps everything 'contained'. If it's possible, I'll find that C-channel on the bottom with something that will either bleed or lose paint. Neither of which I'm very fond of.

This thread has sort of run here and there, but this question sort of brings it back towards its original intent.

When I'm welding, do I want the ground clamp attached as close as possible to where I'm doing the welding?

I've seen videos of where the person is welding on a work table and has the clamp biting on to the tables top. Yes, there seems to be enough 'flow' of electrons to allow the arc to be struck and welding taking place, but are you getting the same penetration?

Yes, as close as safely/possible.

Thanks TWD,

Since my welding has no formal training, self taught. I'm just as likely to 'learn' a bad habit as good, I figure. So, I ask questions when I see something that doesn't quite make "sense" to me.

YouTube, believe it or not, has a lot of videos that seem like they are on the up and up about technique and set up, but you can't always be so sure.

Speaking of YouTube, if anyone has some links to videos there or elsewhere that they've come across and find to be helpful and filled with some good knowledge, I'd love for you to post them to this thread. Having 'pre-screened', by those of you who really DO know the proper ways and means, and therefore true information is a big help for the rest of us newcomers to the art of welding.

Thanks so much

Big wave,

One of the most popular "learning" spots for welding on the web is http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/

Its chock full of good welding videos. Mr. Collier, the owner of the site is a welding instructor for a major airline company based out of Atlanta. A Miller guy himself, last year his curiosity got the best of him and he bought one of our units to see what the buzz was about. But even well before he ever bought a unit from us, I referred customer to this site because of his natural way of explaining problems and issues with welding. A picture or video, rather, is worth a million words when it comes to welding. You can see thewelding results of our units there as well. But whether its TIG or MIG, or even stick he has the best "down and dirty" welding tips and videos on his site of anything I have seen.

Thanks Mark,

I was hoping you'd see that post and reply. I figured you to have some good nuggets of Internet wisdom 'squirreled' away some where.

Congrats on the sale. Having someone like that change their 'tune' or at least say it's a real/valid alternative can really help the sales and therefore the bottom line.

I'm going to go by and inspect my dumpster today. We'll see what $50 is going to buy. The owner switched to a new trash company who uses a front end loading truck, so all his old real loaders are just sitting. I called about a new, smaller 1 or 2 cubit yard dumpster, $350+++ I can buy A LOT of metal to reinforce and still be WELL under that price range.

Alright, all you 'Metal Melters',

How is the best way to make a permanent and lasting repair of these two components.

I have a small air compressor. The housing that holds the filter has been 'torn asunder' from the fixture that threads into the air intake port.

They are dissimilar metal types and I'm wondering what is the best way to join the two.

The first time the compressor got knocked over, there was still some teeth holding the two together and I just used epoxy to add some strength. Now, there is nothing still engaging between the two pieces.

I haven't cleaned of the epoxy, which I will do before implementing my repair. Also, I'll make sure that I have nice, clean metal as well.

Now! Let the learning begin. :)

Thanks to all for their time and typing.
