Rimguard vs. Methanol

"There is a popular misconception that when Rome conquered Carthage, they salted the farmlands to prevent anything from growing. In fact, this is a 20th century myth which has no bearing in reality. When the Romans conquered Carthage, they went from house to house capturing slaves and slaughtering the rest. They burnt the city to the ground and left it as a pile of ruins. This resulted in the loss of a great deal of historical information on Carthage, which makes the study of it difficult in modern times."

Egyptians are not Carthaginians.:D Move West about 1300 miles and you'll hit the Nile. Of course I am just repeating an old saw but I believe the Romans were supposed to have salted the fields in Egypt too.

By the way which is more expensive?? I am sure whichever is cheaper is what I have.

Methanol mix or WWF would be a fair amount more expensive than CaCl. CaCl is very cheap, pennys per pound. Methanol is moderately expensive somewhat more than gasoline as I recall. I would guess that 30 gallons of CaCl solution would cost in the $10 range while methanol mix or WWF is double or triple that.

Yeah I know, I was looking up myths and found this quote as it is often reported that the armies of different countries did this. I even found a reference to the allegations of it being done during the Civil War. It is pretty much agreed that due to the cost/value of salt, Roman soldier were reportedly paid in salt, and the difficulty/logistics of doing so that this did not happen. One possible source for this was that sometimes a "curse" or spell was placed by drawing a circle around an area and spread pinches of salt.

When I see these things I just kind of like to research them as I find it interesting; nothing personal intended, just thought some might find it of interest; guess I was wrong.

I was more worried about toxins(possibly) getting into my pond and killing my Koi.
I have at least 2 of them that should be worth close to 10 grand each.
I chose the Rimguard/beetjiuce.
2.50 per gallon, plus labor, plus metal valve stems because according to Rimguard, the juice will eat the glue that holds the rubber valve stems together.

As an owner of Rim Guard Inc. I thought I should weigh in on the unfortunate and erroneous statement that Rim Guard contains calcium chloride. The web page referenced by Johnny B at Ballastar.com was left over from when they were a distributor for Rim Guard prior to 2005, they subsequently developed a calcium chloride produce known as Citrustar but failed to remove this page from the internet and substitued the Citrustar MSDS for the Rim Guard MSDS. I just discovered this today and have asked the owners of Ballastar to remove this page from the internet as it is misleading and a trademark infringement.

Rim Guard is an all natural product known as de-sugared molasses which is a by product of the production of sugar from sugar beets. There never has been or ever will be any calcium chloride in the product. It is naturally non-corrosive. We have over 700 dealers nationwide who have filled tires with over 8 million gallons of Rim Guard in the last 10 years. We have worked very hard at building a successful business around a product that is beneficial to tractor owners and environmentally friendly and hope that our good name is not damaged by this misinformation. For the truth about Rim Guard you may visit our website at Rim Guard - Liquid Tire Ballast.

... about as non toxic as water and vegetable juice.

Hey now! I can't find a stinkin' gas station anymore that doesn't put "up to 10%" vegetable juice in their gas!!

Corn is a vegetable isn't it?? :)

I got 55 gallons of -20 WWF at my local oil supplier for around $38 last winter to fill my tires. Only took 44 gallons so I dumped the rest in empty gallon milk jugs and keep 6 for myself and gave the rest away.

That is a very good price but still quite a bit more than CaCl. Best deal I got on WWF was a buck a gallon from Home Depot on sale.
