Just make sure your implement drive shaft doesn't bottom out unless you're using a QH or Pat's (and haven't modified the drive shafts to suit).
I have read (probably here on TBN) PTO extenders can result in premature wear on the tractor's stub shaft bearings. I have no idea if that's true and I still use my extender when hooking up my chipper (Woods chippers come with very short drive shafts).

I use a Quick-Hitch, which is why I got the 4" PTO extender; but thanks for the warning.

I think I would weld it too, even if it was just to save as a spare.

By the way, you can MIG it also.
For those of you who don't know, there are four types of cast iron:
Grey, white, maleable and nodular. White is not weldable but the rest are. I use ER70S-6 from Radnor. Which i also use for most welding apps even mild steel. It works well on oily, dirty or rusty metal too.

Rob

My first spool of MIG wire was Radnor as I got it from the Airgas dealer I bought my Miller from. When it ran out, I got some Lincoln wire, and it makes for a much better weld.

Rob,
I would doubt that the hook is cast.... most are forged.

That's a good point, possibly yes, but it still has very much the same composition and weldability of a cast piece.

That looks like a different wire composition, what are the numbers? I have Lincoln and Radnor wire but not the same direct cross reference. They look like two different heat ranges.

Is that stainless?

Rob:

The camera's flash is giving the illusion of stainless. The Lincoln wire I got at Home Depot, and right off-hand i don't recall which wire I bought; but I do remember that according to Lincoln, it was a good general purpose wire.

As for the Radnor wire, I think I saved the plastic spool with the model number on it.

If you'd like, I can try and track both down for you.

Thanks Mjncad but that's OK. I would be curious about the disignation number on the Lincoln wire though, it should be on the spool.

Forged parts can and often do have what looks like a mold parting line. The extra metal that is squeezed out between the dies in the forging process is often trimmed and/or ground off and looks like a mold parting line.

Yes, that's true. I looked at a bunch of forged hooks, etc that I have,
all marked "forged". Some have parting seams, some of which seem to
be ground off. I suspect that *all* hooks of this type are forged, not
cast, as you state. I also have some cheapo Chinese slip hooks, not
marked, with no parting seams, and I have bent several of them when I
used them as cable chokers.

I'd say you guys are probably correct.

Sorry, bottom line is you have a choice to weld or buy new. The point is that cast iron can be welded relatively easily which makes welding is a viable option.
