PTO Generators

You should search on this subject as there are other threads on it.

Personally, I'd not run a PTO generator off my tractor.

Stand alone generators are cheap, I bet in some cases if not most cases they are less than PTO.

Easy to set up, I just role mine out of my garage, start up and plug in my pig tail.

If it was run off my tractor, I'd need to go out to my tractor, start it up, drop off what ever is attached (typically backhoe), then hook up the generator, then move cars so I can park it near the house, then plug in.

I'd much rather put hours on my $400 6500 watt generator than my $20K tractor.

If the generator fails, I buy another, still way ahead of the game.

My stand alone has worked great for me, ran it 4 days straight a couple of years ago with no issues. Neighbor ran his 8 days straight. Would've sucked to put 200 hours on my tractor if I had been him without the stand alone.

And I look at it nearly the exact opposite.

Having multiple tractors I do NOT want another engine to maintain and stock fuel for.

If one tractor has a problem I can always hook another on it. The hours would be nil in the scheme of things.

Plus we power different locations so it is easier just to hook up the generator and tow it to where we need it.

Another good point on run time.

My stand alone will run for about 12-14 hours on a tank.

Anyone know how long a typical tractor will run at 3/4 throttle with on and off load on a tank? I'm betting at least 8 hours?

What's a typical tractor? lol

I use a 265 MF with a 18 gallon tank @~ 1gal/hour.

There are some good rules of thumb on power generation fuel consumption.
If a diesel powered generator is operating at between 25%-100% of it HP rating then it consumes between 0.07 -0.08 gallon per KWH.

So a 30 HP tractor running a 15KW then the fuel usage would be aprox.
15 x 0.07= 1.05GPH to 15 x 0.08=1.2GPH
These are rulesof thumb and will get into the ball park. There are some exceptions to the rule as always.

During the wind storm 2 years ago I used my 7k pto generater (from n tool) behind a yanmar 2000 for 8 hrs a day for 2 days in 2nd pto gear.About 2000 rpm's,a little less than 1 gal an hr. The lites had a suttlele flicker to them but every thing worked. tv computer water heater 1 burner on the stove nothing heavyer.

Thanks,

Therefore, my 30 HP tractor, with a 7.5 gallon tank would run for about 6.25 hours on a tank running 15KW. That is a little over double the KW of my stand alone. The 6KW runs my house though. I'd be at about a wash as far as run time if I was running a 6KW three point generator. I guess I'd loose a little through the tractor's gearbox.

I know there are various views on this subject and maybe I'm just a tractor babyier, but kills me to think of my tractor sitting there running for days on end.

I shut the stove breaker, even a burning does a number on my generator. Runs the well pump, furnace, all lights, TV's computers, etc. Just not the stove top or stove or dryer.

I can't believe winter is almost here.

How does a PTO generator deal with different loads? A stand alone has a governor that will adjust the throttle to keep the RPM at the set point. A PTO generator feeds nothing back to the tractor. Do you set the RPMs a little high with no load or is the drop not enough to worry about?

I suspect that a tractor may be at the high end of consumption(less fuel effiecient) because of the gearing that isnt used when you have a dedicated diesel directly connected to a generator. Remember the consumption is directly proportional to the load in KW so if you are not using the entire
15KW the it would use less fuel. Clear as mud? :)

I have a stand alone generator also, it can not come anywhere close to the PTO generators in terms of kW. I think my stand alone is 6500, most the PTO once sized for my tractor are 15000.
