Big Wave D
I think you should try to fix it. That is what I would do.
Look at it this way. You have nothing to loose but you can gain some experience. The sketch of the bevels posted before would be a great way to start. Go at the edges with your grinder until it looks like Shade Tree Welder's sketch.
Take the pieces off the bush hog and see if you can weld them in a flat position for ease of welding position. I would do the first pass with 6011 and may be one or two more passes with 7018 as it was mentioned before.
After the 6011 clean out the slag (can be tough) with a wire wheel and then give it the 7018. This would be a good time to burn some of that 7018AC you were asking about.
If you want to be extra cautious grind the welds flush with the original surface and weld some long narrow plates (let's say 3/4"x2"x3/16") over it on both sides of the hole. But don't weld along the short side of the plates just along the long sides.

If you have the time to try this and feel like working on it, then why not. You will still have the $52 to spend if things don't work out. :drink:
(It does sound like a good price.)

Easier to read how to do it,,,than do it,,,and you never know who mighta wrote that to begin with,,,,:D,,,so,,tell us how you do that than,,,[now don't say drill holes],,and don't tell us about preheating,,,tell us how you weld cast iron, and make it hold in a stressfull situation,,,I've done a little of it,,but as all modern type guys/welders,,we have lost the incentive,,,,so.... tell us,,pictures would be nice as shield arc says.:p

G,

You might want to go and read the four threads I posted, they were actual
paying jobs I did when I was still running my welding business. I do describe how I welded them and how I controlled the pre and post heat, what metallurgy I used and why. On one repair I even discuss replacing a large chunk of missing CI with steel. I know for a fact the two peices for the gear shop are still in use as I was up there just a few weeks ago to stop in an BS with the owners. Shield and I are old friends, he will back me up on this.

If I owned the ol' gal, I'd definitely take another swing or two. I'm just plain stubborn that way.

That being said, the elderly gentleman that owns said piece of equipment has been very generous with his equipment and allowing my use of it. There is no way that I can in good conscience return it with the thought in the back of my mind that it's going to possibly break again. I really wouldn't sleep very good at night. I hope my $20 of steel from unknown origins doesn't have some internal flaw, I don't think the total bill of $52 includes Magna-Fluxing!!:D:laughing::D

All this talk of greens and venison is making me hungry and I've just had my supper for the day. :)

Thanks for the nice comment.

I feel that they're saving me a lot of money that I'm not paying a rental shop, and it isn't putting me into the poorhouse to give whatever I've borrowed some, usually much needed, TLC.

Besides, it's nice to get one's power equipment back with a full tank of gas.

The gentleman that owns the rotary cutter has also let me borrow his 'redwood' splitter. It's home built and made out of massive parts. The hydraulic cylinder looks like it came off a D-5 dozer. It has an ancient 16+ horsepower motor powering it. They came up with a cable and pulley system so that it could raise and lower itself. You'd be working on a dandy hernia otherwise. Anyway, the spark plug and air filter looked like original equipment and the oil wasn't much prettier. I really couldn't see how the thing could even run. As a side note, I think it could have doubled as a rock crusher in the non-woodcutting season. :D

You would think it would be mild steel and if it is it shouldn't have broke again that fast,,but you don't show your weld[that I could see],,pictures you show don't tell me much,,but kinda lean cast ironish???? break that is,,can't tell,,,

if you know you got a good weld on it,,and it broke for no reason,,than it must be something,,but can't tell what kind of welder you are with the pictures I see.:D

i bet that old mower shakes pretty good.. and even more now that the hitch pins aren't absorbing some of it.. :)
