How do you put your tire chains on ?

Well, I tension my chains as I just don't like the flip-flip-clang noise.
Besides the clang-clang means that the fender is getting a beating and paint is coming off.

I made tensioners using 1 inch strips of tractor inner tubes and hardware store 'S' hooks.
Works great for me, and cheap!
I generally use 4-5 on the outside of each tire in an 'X' pattern.

Same with me. I don't like the noise. I don't know if the noise is just the chain rattling against itself or rattling against my fender and chewing a hole in it. I did buy the spring chain tensioners from tirechains.com.

Just wanted to add that I hope I wasn't coming off as a "know it all" in my replies. It wasn't intended to be. I have 5 years experience with manufacturing custom tire chains and I am always learning something new regarding snow chains....

thanks for listening to my rants. lol

Your response were quite enlightening...especially to guys like me who know nothing about tires chains.
Thank you for your input, and keep posting!!

It is great to have your input on TBN.

This is my first year using chains on the tractor. I appreciate this kind of help.

I put my new Duogrip chains on today. I slowly drove on to them 'til the end that goes over the tire was at 2 o'clock. I loosely hooked the outside to just hold it, hooked the inside hand tight. I then tightened the outside cam lock. I put 2 bungies inside on an offset+ to clear the axle, & 3 on the outside in a * pattern. I drove it & it seems fine. I used to jack up the wheel on my other tractor, however, thi seemed easier. My $.02 only.
I just zip tied the extra links back to themselves. My dedicated plow truck has been this way for years.

For my garden tractors, I just jack the wheel up & roll the chains around the tire. I use two pair of pliers to pull the latch as tight as possible, that's as tight as needed!

Big tractors & trucks, we laid the chains out & pulled the vehicle onto them. Fortunately, the fire trucks we had to chain down were on a concrete floor! ~~ grnspot110

I learned a good method several years ago on TBN. I have tirechains.com v-bar chains on all 4 wheels (I have to reverse the front wheels to accomodate chains) so I needed an easy way to get chains on.

I attached a bunji cord t each side of a chain and then lay the chains road side face up just on top of the tire. The bunji is stretched out within a lug. I the drive slowly forward until the chain is fully wrapped around the tire.

I bought tensioners but I found the heavy duty rubber bunji cords are easy to work with and hold the chains in place just fine.

That's what I use also, bungee's with S hooks(for tensioners, that is).

best solution is instead of having 3 bare links between cross rails, "double duty" the set and have only 1 bare link between the rails... this will help alot with ladder style chains... this is the only cost effective solution to deep lug tires.... yes some rails will fall between the lugs... but the only other option is to use a H-pattern or net pattern chain... and that gets pricey

I've got 2 link ladder chains on my front R4s. They are on very tight yet have settled between the lugs. I was thinking... why not modify to set the cross chains on a diagonal? Anyone tried this?
