She fired one round through one of my .38s about 46 years ago, but I was also holding her hand at the time.

Sounds like me and my wife at miniature golf when we were dating.

Serious business, though. When we bought our first house, we also bought a revolver and I made her practice with it often. :)

Is crime really that high where you all live? Or just paranoid?

I also have many firearms in my house too. low crime and staying that way.

Just me but nothing beats a 12 ga. loaded with 00 Buck ! right by your bedside.

I've become fond of the 20 gauge. Lightweight, small, and very mild recoil (even with some stouter loads) that lets you shoot in any position

All should remember that a police officer's job is to subdue for possible prosecution, not be an executioner, and unfortunately their opposition has no such restriction yet may determine the ultimate outcome. MikeD74T
I don't know of an LEO who discharges their weapon NOT to neutralize the threat. You don't shoot to wound, even if that is how it ends up (assuming the LEO believes his life is in immediate danger).

Incidentally, I think the Illinois State Police were one of the first departments I know of to go to 9mm semi-autos (I think it was about 1970) and a study I read indicated they shot numerous suspects during the first year, some shot multiple times, and not a single suspect died; all survived.
As far as calibers go, the bigger, heavier and faster the bullet goes (creating a larger wound channel), your chances of death are quicker if the target is hit as compared to a smaller bullet that fragments upon impact, assuming both bullets hit in the same location IMO (hope I didn't open up a can of worms there:D).

That definitely stopped those carrying .44 magnums and pretty well all the .357s, too, since you cannot handle the recoil to fire, reload, and fire again fast enough for the police course.
One reason why the .40 S&W was "born" from the 10mm.

In my defense, I wasn't the one who derailed this thread:laughing:

I agree - I also have a 20 guage over and under loaded with slugs in another location but I also use what I have..so the 12 ga. with 00 fills the bill..

Just an observation....If you have been watching the News with the shooting in Arizona the first thing the authorities did was to seize the shooters computers and they are going to backtrack and see what he posted and the web sites he visited..Might be a good idea to keep that in mind when posting what you think you would do if you ever had to shoot an intruder...if , God forbid, you ever had to shoot an intruder all of your past posts and internet usage will come into play...I'm just saying.....:)

When we were first married, and I was working nights, my wife would sleep with my S&W .38 Chief under her pillow. Any time I went home before daylight, I called first to tell her to put that gun away.

Our town seems to be where people from Chicago, Gary and Detroit come to "relax". It is right on the way between those areas. Hence, lots of trouble. :(

Many home break-ins are common while people are home. You just never know.
