Well no technically not according to the ISO 4548-12 for particle test FRAMs best designed filter the Extended Guard or next the Tough Guard is 97-99% @ 20 microns. and that's ONLY on equivalent PN's PH8A, 3387A and 6607

The Mobil is 99.2% @20 percent efficiency rating (under SAE J1858 Multi-Pass Efficiency Test), across the board all PN's so splitting hairs i know but just saying..

daman1 maybe you should reread the Fram site info.

Tough Guard is is their top filtering filter (99%) and not Xtended Guard(97%) which traps less particles so it can be ran for 10,000 miles before replacing.

I use a lot of WIX filters because they are handy to purchase and are good filters but they are hard to trust sometimes.

On the 429 I was encouraged to go with the 2 qt version of WIX vs the standard 1 qt version.

After doing some crossing on the web I learned the 1 qt trapped 99% >20 microns BUT their 2 qt version only trapped 97%. WIX will make filters that cross over to other brands in a PHYSICAL sense but not MEDIA sense.

So far I have found no evidence that a $13 K&N oil filter will make an engine last any longer than a $6 Fram Tough Guard.:thumbsup:

People should use the filter they prefer however 99.9% have NO idea what brand of filter or who made it that is parked in their driveway.

It's a little too expensive for my tastes, though, since I change my oil at 3k-5k miles.

I usually buy the Wix filters for my car & tractor and Motorcraft for my F-150.
Wix can be bought at many auto parts stores. I get mine at O'Reillys.

Same here on O'Reilly's. I agree the Xtend Guard is a physically stronger filter of all Fram's line up. It just will not filter and hold as small of particles as the Tough Guard but is rated for 10K mile of use unlike the Tough Guard.

Since it is near 50 today I may use my new filter cutter to look at a bunch of used ones I have been saving after I get the dump truck full of gas and all my empty containers because ice is possible this next week.

I do about 75 oil changes a year and have been doing so since 1989. I have been buying my filters on line 100 or so at a time. I have used Fram, Pennzoil, and Quaker State Filters exclusively for the last 15 or more years. Just got 100 air, oil, fuel, and hydraulic filters for $155 to my door. Prior to that I used other brands. The only engine issue I have had in all that time is a 4.3L V6 in a S-10 Blazzer throw a rod in 1989. It was a failed oil pump, not a filter issue.

Chris you should check out Fleetfilter.com for WIX,Napa golds you would get a nice discount if you do that many services and know you'll be using a quality built filter.

#edit# ..i did a search here and read up the AC thing you mentioned and cant for the life of me under stand why a more restrictive filter would be needed to build proper operating oil pressure but just the contrary, bad engine design, engine wore out? if bearing clearances are right and pump is working i don't see why.


But anyway..any of todays filters are of a cellulose paper design or a Synthetic glass media or glass micro fiber media in the synthetic version filters and WILL NOT hamper oil flow in any way on a modern engine IF crossed to the right PN, that manufacture in question would not want that type of liability and has done intensive testing on that filter. Most any filter today will have flow,thread design and bypass specs so you can compare them to your OEM.

i'm not arguing with you just trying to under stand your floss media comment,it's hard to believe FRAM would be the only maker of filter for that application.

owning an allis I can tell you it's a wide topic of discussion. on the allis board at the 'unofficial' allis site, any time someone come son with a low oil pressure issue we ask them if they just changed oil and filter. 99% of the time they did and used a non floss filter..

It's not an uncommon problem if you are the owner of a few specific models of tractor.

last I heard there is a distribuitor making a 'like kind' filter that will work.. but is special and quantity order.. vs just getting the fram filter which is available.

so yes any filter that will screw on with matching specs will work

kind of like saying any stainless steel bolt of the correct size and thread pitch can be used to replace this stainless steel bolt .. of 'certain' size and pitch.

that's my point.. it's dern hard to find a filter made the same, thus an appropriate match...

Like i said i googled it and didn't find much on the web about this filter design, tho this tractor is waay before my time working with this type situations and maintaining high dollar equipment is not so we agree to disagree.

Did we disagree? I made a very specific statement that said that any filter that crosses is not automatically the correct filter for CERTAIN applications.. IE.. some very specific 40's era tractors.

I didn't see where you came up with anything to contradict that.. or even found any meaningfull research on floss media. I limited the scope of my comment to a very specific application.. not a broad one... past that I don't disagree that a 51010 wix won't fit fine in the place of a napa 1010....
