Great thread timing, I had to patc a fence at work today somone cut over the weekend. They cut the fence and rode in to the working face. Had to have been on saturday after 2pm or Sunday. They rode nearly to the shop but I think the old landfill dogs had it gaurded. I d love to catch one abandoned either broken or out of gas in there. either bury it or compact it. I worked o na job one time where a guy was comming in and stealing tools and radios off equipment. One Monday morning found the truck with matching tires to the tracks left before with a few of our batteries in it.

Lets just say we used a 580 Case hoe to make and example out of it.

I imagine Taylor was smart enough to never take pictures of something like that. You never know when somebody might sue you and get those pictures to try and use against you. They probably wouldn't win, but that's just another hassle.

On several occasions years ago, I had the opportunity to trash a car left parked by trespassers, but my plan was always to surround the vehicle with a berm of dirt and make them dig out. One vehicle I actually started the berm when they saw me and showed up to beg me to let them leave. They were a couple of drunks who cashed a lottery ticket, bought booze, and decided to "take a vacation" and go fishing in my pond. They kept telling me that they were "celebrating their windfall" as if that should make any difference to me.

Another car was spotted in the lot next to my parents old abandoned house. I was going to build a berm around that one, but when I got there, the car was buried up to the axles and nobody was around. They had stolen stuff out the house and loaded it into the car, only to get stuck. I decided to call the police. The group of theives arrived back just before the policeman and started begging me to not do anything because they said they thought the house was abandoned and it was okay to take the stuff out of it. Well, I just laughed as the patrolman rolled up. He asked me what I wanted to do? I said I wanted all the stuff put back into the house and for them to leave and not come back. I asked him to call a wrecker and let them pay to have their car towed out of the mud. When the wrecker arrived, it was my brother's son-in-law. What a laugh! He didn't let on that he knew me, but asked the guys how much money they had. Between all of them, they had $65. He told them that normally he got $75 for this kind of job, but would take their $65 to do it.

After pulling them out, they left in a hurry and we had a good laugh with the patrolman because Sean never charged more than $50 for that kind of tow, but he decided to send the theives away dead broke. That was a fun day, and they never came back.

Jim, at those rates, it was a loooooong time ago! You can't even get a tow truck to even show up for that kind of money any more! :)

Ian, it was 1997, so that's been awhile back when diesel was still far less than $1 a gallon. Also, the tow truck only had to drive about 5 miles to get there and only ran his winch to pull them out. If they had not had the money, he was going to take the car to the impound lot, but they coughed up the cash when they realized they could do that and drive away with only their pride hurt.:D

About four months ago I was awakened by a horse being wild and it was because a neighbors horse had gotten loose and ran right through my electric fence and gotten in with my stuf horse. So I got my daughter up to go the neighbor we thought it was which is was not and he went to get the neighbor he knew it was. LOL ....I understand these things happen but here we are a women and a young girl with two older grown men who not only did not help me catch the horse, but then loaded up and left us there to fix the fence at 4 am all by ourselves (keep in mind we have four horses that were being held with this one fence!). Of course we did it, but my husband says the same thing, he ended up having a little talk with the guy telling him we understood and next time we would like for him to help repair the damage!

UGH.......what are you to do! LOL

During the late 80's, I was surveying for a highway job that was several miles long. We found a stretch of fence that was knocked down and plastic car parts all over the place. We found the guys ID laying in the ditch. We looked up the farmer and he said when the guy knocked his fence down, he pulled him out of the ditch. The guy said he was going to come back and fix it, and of course he didn't. The farmer had a nice little smile on his face when we handed him the ID, and he was going to give him a phone call.

Common courtesy like common sense... very uncommon commodities.

Berm? Why not get creative? Have a sign prebuilt to deploy when needed. It should say something like "Temp parking $50/hour CASH ONLY!" Drive it into the ground directly in front of the offending vehicle and park your machine directly behind their car or cut a ditch to prevent their escape. Place a preprinted parking/service invoice under their windshield wiper with time/date they parked and a schedule of fees and charges. Why not charge for security, you are keeping their vehicle safe from vandals and thieves aren't you?

Why not clean their lights all the way around ($20) clean their windows and windshield ($20) Check the air in their tires ($20) and whatever other service you think appropriate. Demand to be paid in cash before you let them leave. Call the police if they baulk at all.

If they aren't there for your fine service then why are they there? They must be trespassing, huh. Parking in your high security pay to park area and leaving without paying is theft.

Think about it. Be creative. Have fun with it.

What gets me here is the county bought a new Bransone 70 HP cab tractor. They also bought a new sidemount bushhog. I came home as they were mowing the ditches. I hears a noise and went out side and they had moxed over the ditch and hit the corner post. He was trying to mow my already pruned privet hedges. I called the supervisor and he came and promised to fix it and never did. I fixed it and it happened again. The next time I drove a big pipe in the ground and they had to fix the new mower. I didnt mind the first time but the not fixing it chapped me a bit.

My township guy hit an aluminum gate of mine with the side mount hog. Chewed it to shreds - then left the shreds hanging out into the roadway and in my fence row. Never said a word to anyone. Just left it. I called and they said to go get a new gate and send them the bill! BS - you get the gate and put it up jackass! People are demented.
