So...I give up. Witht he snow we have this year, I am thinking about breaking down and getting some chains.

I run Ag tires so here are my questions:

Duo-chain style I assume? V-bar style worth the extra cost? What about Canadian chains?

Thanks!

These have worked well for me. Made by Tellefsdal in Norway, also sold as Norse in Canada, and as Aquiline Talon in the US.

Cheapest ladder chains will work just fine.

Ladders and variations on ladders will disappear between the lugs of R-1's. Duo-Grip or Double Ring chains are the best mix of function and cost for use on R-1 tires.

This is a place for sharing opinions and you now have mine. Your mileage may vary.

Good point, a neighbour has ladders on his Massey 276 with R1's and is complaining about the same thing.

4-link ladders were worse than useless on my ags. 2-links might be better but they cost and weight quite a bit more. For pavement use, the duo-grips are likely your cheapest universal option that is worth something.

That be strange to me. I ran ladder chains on my Ag tires for 23 years and never had a complaint from the traction dept. I think there is a perceived problem, not a real one.

But anyone is welcome to buy more expensive chains if they prefer.
I don't have a problem with it at all. :D

Just feel it is misleading to our new members looking into putting on chains at reasonable cost as they can get by with, when ladders work ok on R-1 and R-4.
I'm a bit puzzled at it.

These have worked great the last 12 years.

HUGE difference between R1s and R4's

If we have differing opinions, why am I "misleading new members" while your advise is pure? It is just as easy for me to suggest that you want them to waste their money on a cheaper style of chains that won't perform.
Your photo IS misleading by not stating clearly that those tires are industrial tread R-4 tires and not Ag R-1's.

Rant over.

I have to say I'm with Rick and Wedge on this one. I looked at the neighbour's Massey on Saturday morning with 2 link ladders over Ag (R1) tires, and 75 % of the crosschains were lying between the lugs.

They might be better if they were really tight on the tire, I don't know.

If you're going to buy first time, I believe you're better off to spend a little more and get the best you can afford, and that's my opinion only.
