Bearcreek,
I look forward to seeing the truss design. From my research into trusses I think a 28' clear span truss with 1' overhang will take advantage of 16' lumber with only one joint on the bottom chord and no joints on the top chord.

Bobrip,
I am certainly leaning towards the trusses. Would really like to try and build them myself. I could see three rows being productive. I am sure I will be glad that everyone has advised me of going that direction.

Has anybody used the standard pressure treated 2x6's laminated for post? Adding the asphalt enough protection?

I am sure everyone has seen these truss designs by Midwest. I don't understand why it is saying both 4/12 and 5/12 use a 16' top chord?
Any problems with this design using 2x4x16's? 24" on center?

Your talking about 10' bays ... are you planning the rafters 10 O.C. ? Use a double plate and you could go with 2x8 rafters 5' O.C. and use 2x4 purlins

2x8 rafters to span 30 feet?

Don't even consider it, you are not qualified to build a truss.

lol...why is that?

2x8 rafters to span 30 feet?
No. I was talking about running from outside post to center post -15'. Thanks

Well building a truss is not that difficult ... in fact I think even you could do it ... follow a drawing .. available online ... use the first one for a pattern and build the rest.

4/12 takes 15'10" and a 5/12 takes 16'3 ... they may be holding the 5/12 in on the bottom web ... on each side, I doubt it ...but they maybe doing it to save from going to 18' lumber
