Pole Barn - Why not use center post?

Well..I received the first quote back from a truss builder about 20 miles away. $1560 delivered for 17 trusses. Guy has lost his mind. :confused2:

30' truss 1' overhang each side. 3' spacing. No finished ceiling. 4/12 pitch.

With 5' center you only need 11 ... maybe its me but $91 a truss isn't that bad. Lumber has gone up ... considerably.

I'm going to make a call to the truss place about 8 miles from me and see what they say ...

I just got a quote here in Omaha for 24' span spread web storage trusses. With a 2' overhang and 6/12 pitch they were 92.88 each.

If you build your own, what do you use for the joints? plywood, pound on truss plates?

Just called our local menards, which is like a lowes or home depot

For 30' residential common trusses which is a 4/12 pitch and designed for 2' centers, they were $45 each.

I asked about 4' centers, which they dont stock, but they can get for $104.

Might be able to talk to an engineer in your area and see if you can stretch a 2' truss out to 3' centers, since it is only a barn/garage, and you dont see much snow load, and a light steel roof????

Either that, or you can call a company that specializes in pole barns and price 8' trusses. They will no doubt be a lot more $$$ but you wont need as many of them.

You will not stick frame it cheaper. Have you priced your center poles. Laminating white wood and putting a fence paint on them is not going to last. If you need a permit in your county it would be good to see what they want now. Some of what you have mentioned would not fly in my Georgia county. Also, trusses will come with an engineering stamp and if you need a permit it may well be require. Other wise add the expense of approved plans to your pricing.

Just received another quote for $1192 for the truss package. 2 ends 15 center.

We don't have a menards. I think I just need to steal your truss plans and do it myself.




This is also why I am leaning towards the method of using the center post. I had thought the material cost would be about half.

I just got off the phone with the inspector. Seemed like the first time he had been asked about a pole barn. Anyway..Said two inspections. Set the post , but don't pour so he can see how deep. Asked him how deep? Ummm..how tall is the walls- 10'....3ft deep is good. Ok ....how about the doubled header ..is 2x12's with post spaced 10' on center ok...ummm... that should be good. Ok....what about homemade trusses...do I need an engineered stamp? Ummm..no if you have a drawing ...just so you did not throw them together. Ok..when is the second inspection....ummm after its done. lol...ok.. thanks for the info.:thumbsup:

Graybeancounter I have some plans for trusses I'll dig them up tomorrow and post the pics.I think I have 3/12 and 6/12 pitch much cheaper to make your own and very strong.

Not having poles also allows more flexibility in what you put in it. You may get three rows of equipment in some places instead of two.
