Anybody have a sleep number or comfortaire mattress?

It just figures that the Sleep Number sale (50% off) just ended yesterday (Feb 21st). We are also looking and doing research. In the Northeast there are Bob's Discount Furnature Stores and they have "Bob-O-Pedics" that supposedly are the same as TemperPedic but at about half the cost. They have a 20 year warranty. The Mrs. and I checked one out yesterday and it seemed OK. Still doing research though, and I want to thank everyone for their contributions to this post. The posts have been very informative. I personally have never slept on one but my daughter has one. My SIL likes, my daughter hates it. I wonder if you can try them out? We have a real thick, soft mattress with the pillowtop on both sides. We rotate it about every 6 months or so. Its 12 years old and you can see some indentions when its time to rotate, but not too bad. But it is unbelievably comfortable. I think its call backsaver by Simmons or one of the other big manufacters. Was about $1800 12 years ago.

I'd really question the warranty, there is what they call an acceptable amount of sag that is not covered by warranty, some of them claim that's just normal and won't warranty it. Ours imprinted at about three years old and "Oh that'normal". Went out and bought a Sleep Number bed, hope it lasts better than the memory foam, maybe ours just had Alzheimers and forgot to rebound.:D

Here are a few pics of our new natural latex bed.. it was just delivered yesterday.. It is a three 3" layers - bottom = x-firm, middle = firm, top = medium.. The layers can be interchanged for personal comfort..

It feels quite 'stiff' right now, but it is suppose to get softer within the first week or so..

Nice! Hows it feel thus far??

All them parts, did it come with an instruction book:D

Seeing that new tag makes me just want to tear it off, but then I wouldn't want to go to prison!!

We are still looking, thanks to all the posters thus far, very good info.

The top layer feels a tad too firm.. After a week or so the latex is suppose start to soften up though (its only the 3 night).. it definitely doesnt sag (ie offers back support) like the inner spring mattress did.. Also there was NO odor (gassing) at all - the tempurpedics take up to 30 days for the smell to go away I been told..

No instruction book.. And I got to put it all together TWICE - the first time I had the cover inside out... Im glad I had them cut the latex into his/her pieces - full king size would be a pain to move around the twin size is manageable

I also get to take it apart and back together again next week - our box springs felt 'solid' when I put it together, but I can see that the mattress is sagging a little bit. so next week i going to put a piece of plywood on top of the box spring to firm it up..

I will look into the latex a little more than. I am sensitive to smells, but may have to tolerate it if the boss gets an idea and counts to 3...

I bought a Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme last fall. No smell to speak of. Definately different than an innerspring mattress. It's soft but very supportive. I really have fallen asleep fast on it. Only drawback is they're expensive.

Thought I'd throw in my 2-cents. Took this journey last summer. Had an old Beauty-Rest mattress that was in need of replacing. Being an old Eng I had to research this thing to death. Might say finding useful info that an eng would appreciate was hard to come by.

Didn't take long to determine a pillow-top was not in our future. Gave thought to a "memory foam" mattress. Wasn't overly impressed with what we tried out in the stores. Did a lot of reading and decided this wouldn't be our first choice. The thermoelastic foam come in different densities and each has a slightly different characteristic. Some are more sensitive to body heat and you sink in somewhat and that make for turning over or otherwise moving somewhat difficult. Wasn't impressed with what material the cover was on most Temperpedic models. See they now offer a cover that appears very close to what we ended up with.

More I read and went shopping for the more we focused on Latex. And has been mentioned in this thread not all mattresses are the same. Seems to me marketing mattresses is not unlike that of used car salesmen. One store pointed us to a brand, an old line US brand and said they had a sale going on but prices were only good for another day. Saw a cutaway model, over a ft thick and there was about 1-2 inches of latex sandwiched in the middle of cheaper poly-foam.

My advise to to NOT buy a mattress on the net unless you've actually seen one in person and at least laid on it for a few mins. People and mattresses are just too different and this is not a one size fit all thing.

Something a little new on the market and found on a number of higher end models is Bamboo fabric covering. Very soft and helps disperse body moisture.

In the end we settled on a latex mattress, Sweda ReNu, made by Lady Americana. Come in three firmness levels, has the bamboo cover and is a sandwich of various foams of varying densities. So far, we've been very pleased. OH, on a foam mattress, one should not place it on top of a conventional box springs as they need better support.

Oh, as has been mentioned, latex come in 2 varieties, natural and Talalay. The Talalay is a little more spendy due to the mfg process. Talalay process insures a more even distribution of the foaming bubbles throughout the thickness. There is only one company in the USA that make Talalay latex.

Here is a good site for those trying to make up their minds on what kind of mattress best suits their needs. Best Mattress Reviews
