Satisfaction 100% with HST. Would never go back to gear (unless I went back into farming and was working large fields).
Can't imagine anyone who is using a CUT and has HST would even think about switching back. But for those who don't have HST, then likely they will remain happy with the gears.
Was the same agreement/disagreement with switching from shift trucks/cars to auto tranny.

Does this equate to a 10 out of 10 rating then?

My Ford 961 is a gear tractor but my parents Kubota (which i use as much as the Ford) is HST. The Kubota is approximately 22 years old and not one problem with the HST. For the record my truck is a manual shift but in a couple years when I buy an new tractor it will be a HST. I guess my rating is 9.5.

My 8 year old JD4100 is a hydro. I'd rate it at 9. It's sometimes a little noisy, but other than that I really like it for mowing and loader work. Those two tasks account for 90% of what I do. Nice to be able to vary ground speed to match grass height with out any effort. The setup allows easy operation of the split brakes as well.

Up thru the two HST tractors nybirdman rated in his post #91, I count 52 total ratings with an average rating of 9.22
Euphoric lack of criticality gives no incentive for improvement. Sure is a good thing they are perfect in every way.

Hmmmm....a fair observation.

I thought my old Kubota L275 DT gear was the most wonderful machine in the world, and it was in perfect shape. I felt guilty replacing it with the DK35 HST.

Any guilt dissolved shortly after doing some "real" work. The more stable DK and simpler to operate HST make work easier, and safer.

Now I think the DK35 HST is the most wonderful tractor in the world.

I'd keep looking but my wife might have something to say about it. Instead I'll sneak in a few implements.:D

a few days ago, i had to remove the loader for some work. While reattaching the loader, i had to get off of the tractor to reset the loader bolts. they were just a hair off. i was able to tap the pedel while standing on the ground and inched the tractor foreward to allign the unit. I LIKE IT.

Not sure how safe it was...but i like it.

Are you saying we shouldn't be airing this in public, where the manufacturers can read it?

They still have to compete with each other.

I do this, too ... but rather than inches I move mine many feet sometimes  Wrap chain around sapling, go press HST pedal forward until tree comes out. Press HST pedal reverse to take slack off chain. Unhook chain. Repeat. Sure, it may run me over some day, but meantime it's more efficient.

It seems like maybe the overall average is levelling out around 9.2.

Hey, can you guy also let us know if you drive an automatic transmission car. I wonder if the two are related? Those of us who drive manuals and have had for years I think are more open to geared tractors than those whom have driven auto's all their lives.

HS
My car is an automatic, my pickup is a 5 speed manual, my Freightliner is a straight 10 speed(manual), my old Cub Cadet was 'half hydro/half gear'
I'll rate my Massey hydro a solid 10.
