I got started about 8:30 and the first thing on the to-do list was get that power-pac mounted down in the frame, it has just been vise-gripped to the cross member but I needed to get it out of the way so I could get the deck on.

I used bed rail to mount the power pack. It is 1 1/2x 1 1/2x1/8 and will work nicely for the mount as there is no stress on it. I had the hoses and fittings from other now defunct projests. The only things I had to buy were the hydraulic bushings for the cylnder, (1" to 3/8"). I mounted the power-pac under the deck as Iplayfarmer was going to do on his dump to get it out of the weather and made sense to me as the dump will be left outside all year long. I don't have the box to put the battery in yet but that will be mounted in front of the deck so if the battery goes dead I can get to it.

next thing on the agenda was the deck. It is .090 hot rolled pickeled and oiled steel. After I got it fitted to the bed (the bed must be a little out of square and I had to cut about 1/8" at one end tapering to nothing at the other). I welded it 2" every 12" around the perimiter. I used lots of clamps and tubeing to hold it flat. It has been said "you can never have enough clamps" and I believe that! I have used vise-grip "c" clamps and my wood working clamps and pipe clamps in this project and still wish I had more!! I have 5 of the VG 11r's and 4 of the 6r's 2 6sp (same as the 6r but with swivel pads) and 1 18r clamps and needed more! That black and orange clamp is a cheap one hand adjustable clame I got at Big-Lots for cheap but you can get them at HF too and works to hold stuff you dont need "moved" into place.

I started putting the sides on next. I used 1 1/2 sq tubing 3/16 wall for the corners and 1 1/2 sq 1/8 wall tubing for the others (only because thats what I had). The sides are 18" tall with a return flange on the top 1" x 1.562" x18" all measured on the id. so the tubing would fit up under the flange. I welded the tube to the bed because I will not be removing the sides at all. The dump cart I am replacing with this one has removeable sides and in 25 years that I have had it I dont think I removed the sides more than 2 or 3 times. If I need a flat bed I have my 6'6"x16" tandem trailer. I got the front and left side uprights on before I ran out of tubing  so I will have to stop at the scrap yard Monday morning before my bible study/ accountability group and get more. I just clamped the sides to the uprights to get a feel for what it will look like when its done. At first I thought it looked like the sides were to high but I think it will be ok. It almost looks like a scaled down version of my brother in-laws Carmate 10' dump but was not planned like that!

In one of the pictures from the post on mounting the power-pac you will see a hint of what color I plan on painting it! Lets see who is observant!!

Your trailer sure is looking good! You have a good hand for design and fabrication. I'm especially interested because you're maximizing your resources by getting stuff from a scrap yard and scrounging from old projects. In my opinion that's when real skill comes in. Anyone can turn out a professional looking project with million dollar tools and new materials. It takes skill to make something as good as your trailer and keep the costs in line. Thanks for posting the details so we can follow your progress.

I came home from work this morning and crashed in my chair but when I opened my eyes it was almost 9:00 am (I work 3rd shift) so only about an hour and a half! I went to the garage and got started on the tailgate. I had the corner posts cut and drilled to accepet the .875 pins. So I worked on the 2 middle uprights and the angle iron that will run the width of the tailgate. The uprights I cut on a 45* angle to match the angle iron on the bottom. I thought I measured right but the length of the uprights was long wich was easy to fix. I love my bandsaw!
I cut the left hand pins at 3 1/3" and the right had pins I cut at 5" and drilled 1/4" holes in these and alighened them with a 1/4" rod and welded them. I welded the tailgate together and then put the pins in.

The next thing was to weld on the little "U"'s that I have had made up about a year waiting to do this project! They are 1 1/2x 1/4" bar that will are welded on the back of the dump sideways if you will. With the opening facing to the rear.
The first pic is a top view of it. This is what will hold the tailgate on and hinge from either top or botom.
While I was consulting with my brother in-law about the cylnder placement last week he told me he wished his tailgate on his Carmate dump trailer would swing. That gave me an idea for making my tailgate swing to the side as well as up and down so I came up with a plan to add "ears" on the right side and thats why the pins are longer on this side.
Pic 2 shows the ears and how it works. If you want the tailgate to drop like a trucks you pull the top lynch pin, if you want to spread gracel you pull the bottom lynch pin if you want it to swing you take the right hand lynch pins and just move them to the outer hole and remove the left hand pins and swing it! so easy1 :thumbsup:I had to grind the radius on the "U" so it would let the tailgate swing. It looks like it will work flawlessly but I will have to move the trailer out of the corner that I am working in so I can test it.
The last pic is of the tailgate opened as far as I could get it without hitting anything!
I am going out of town this weekend and will not be working on it again until Tuesday but still need to get a box made for the battery and the control to go in.

Your three way gate looks great. If I may offer one caution; that "ear" worries me. Even with the corners ground down to round them off, you could be hurrying around the back of your trailer and hook yourself on that ear. That would really "smart"! Some kind of deflector is what I would be putting there. Maybe a piece of 1/8th" flat steel 1" or so wide bent into the shape of a number 7 and welded in just ahead of the ear.
