Comparison Turfs vs. Industrial vs. Bar

How hard are Bars on grass vs turfs and industrials?

How about traction on clay?

Im considering a BX25 and the dealer is really pushing turfs. He said that due to the rain this year people are wanting to go from industrials to turfs on their machines due to damage when turning. Where do Bars fall in there? Easier on the grass when turning, yet still grippy?

What about puncture resistance?

I didn't mow with my BX22, but I did use it in the yard quite a bit for different chores. I had the bar tires on mine, and they were easy on the turf as long as it wasn't soggy. They did leave marks in damp soil that seemed to heal pretty quickly, mostly because they are more like bar turfs than true R-1's, and have a lot of floatation. If I were buying to mostly mow with, I would get the turfs, but a lot of folks that bought both bars, and turfs to use for differnt things usually ended up just leaving the bar tires on since they really aren't bad. Of course I had the loader, and backhoe off for most of those chores. My B2620 is larger, but not heavier really, and it tears up turf in turns with the R-4's more than the BX did with bar tires.

R4s can also take a LOT more fluid ballast due to their larger width, something like 55 gallons for the 17.5Lx24 R4s vs about 35 for the standard R1s on my smallest tractor.
40 more gallons total.. something like 440 lbs of total RimGuard ballast.
In SOME conditions the lower ground pressure due to additional width is GOOD for traction, you tend to "float over" mud and muck instead of "digging into" it.
The R1 will dig you out, but it is most likely the cause of the low ruts that have worn there anyway (-:
Not always the case tho. AGs are always taller and ballast capacity can be deceptive. The 7520 comes with either 19.5x24 R4s or 16.9x30 R1s. There the ballast advantage is a tossup.

I like my turfs. They are great on grass, great in snow, good on dirt, okay in mud. Philip.

I have the same tires as phillip and agree the turfs are great, low damage on grass, good in dirt, ok in mud... As in r4 s will turn into slicks just the same and good in snow. Plus you can always add chains and have the best of both worlds. I had r4s on my 3540 and they were imprinting the crap out of the yard...so i swapped and havent looked back. but my tractor is alot heavier than yours so...

My old (1987) JD855 came with turfs. About 3/4 tread from new.

Have used it for everything, just the way it came. Mow a lot, moved a couple truck loads of driveway gravel, have uprooted tree stumps up to about 6" in diameter.

Pulled my home made sub-soiler around fine. Used it to uproot some old pine roots from a stump about 30" in diameter.

Do use a set of 2 link chains in winter to move snow. Once the ground is frozen.

No complaints. When I have to replace tires, have considered looking into industrials. But would replace with turfs again in a heart beat, considering usage. What will make a big difference when that time comes is what the prices are at that time.

I also use turfs. 80% of my work is mowing. I also dig stumps, move gravel/dirt, move large rocks, blow snow, use a 1 bottom plow, 5 foot cultivator, 4 foot tiller, pull trailers, dig up and transplant large bushes(with the FEL)...............I do it all with turfs:thumbsup:

Philp,
I noticed that your picture number 1 with front plow has no loader frame, but in picture 2 FEL is on. Tell me you don't take off FEL and loader frame to put plow on===do you?
