Jd 5083e
Hello All,

I have a JD 5083e with 553 FEL on order. Now I have to figure out a way to get it home:laughing:

From my research the tractor with cab weighs 7000lb, the loader maybe 1500lb?

I am looking at a 20ft Kaufman equipment trailer. Bumper pull 14,000 GVWR / 20 ft. Wood Deck weighing in at 3000lb giving me 11k of payload.

The tow vehicle is a 2007 Chevy Silverado 2500hd classic with Duramax Allison. Due for a new truck soon, going to go with a SRW 350, 3500.

Mind you this is in rural Kansas and I will only see one stop sign on the way back from the dealer.

Do you think the length will be ok? Any other foreseeable issues?

Tires are not ballasted, we will use a round bale with a spike if we need the weight.

The only thing I can find for the 553 loader is the bucket weight of 392lbs.

Im assuming thats the bucket only, and no other bracketry?

Worst case scenario, Im looking at 9500lbs of tractor and loader?

Your tractor is just a little bigger than our M7040 so I am thinking the loader will weigh about the same. Our loader weighs ~1500 pounds plus the bucket which is ~400 pounds so I would guess you are looking at 1900 to 2000 pounds for the loader and bucket. So your tractor should be right about 9500 pounds.

That trailer sounds like it should work fine. 20' should be long enough for just the tractor and loader. I am guessing that you will want to back the tractor on to the trailer to get the proper weight distribution but you will have to see when you load it.

Your truck should be fine, just make sure the hitch is rated for that much weight. I think the factory hitches are only rated for 7500 pounds without a weigh distributing hitch.

I don't think you will have any problems. That is a nice tractor you are getting:thumbsup:

Thanks for the input Ed!

We were real close to going with the Kubota, but with Deere's financing and the proximity of the dealer it just made sense.

As long as this trailer can get me by delivering it home I will be happy.

Im sure once we get the mx8 mower we will need a longer trailer, at that point I will get a gooseneck.

I needed the weight of the 553 loader, so I talked to the service department of my dealer - took them awhile, but finally found it at about 1500# with no bucket. It's not in the owner's manual like they expected it to be. Also couldn't find it in their service manuals. I think they got it off the shipping invoice.

Get a bigger trailer now, not later. As for a truck you will be fine but the GM factory hitch is not up to the task. Get a 2.5" Reese Titan or similar rested at 15,000#

Thanks for the factual information, I scoured all the manuals and specs and couldnt find a thing. Im sure this info will help out others as well.

If I went with a 24ft, I would probably be looking at gooseneck territory? At that point I could leave the mower on.

Kaufman does have a nice looking 24ft 17GVWR that would probably fit the bill.

I agree, GM could have spent a few more $$$$ and actually put some steel in the hitch.

Thanks again everyone:D

Look at Curt 2.5" hitches. They're almost a direct replacment for the stock hitch and rated to 18k. That's the first thing I did when I got my Dmax.

Curt is a great hitch also. American made with the best paint period.

Just found this thread. Someone posted a JD loader weight chart a while back and the 553 loader is 1,519 pounds, very close to the M7040 as Rancher_Ed suggested. FYI, the bucket (if the "standard" bucket) actually weighs 451 pounds.

Good luck!

I think you will be way ahead to get a gooseneck and b&w hitch now. I use a 24ft 14k gooseneck with a JD 4320 equiped with a FEL and 6ft mx-6 rotary cutter. It gives me about 2ft of extra room. I went ahead and bought the 24ft gooseneck because I intend to upgrade to a JD 5083 when the money is there.....:licking:

What year is your Dmax? I've been looking at Curt and Reese for a 2010 GM and neither offers a 2.5" that will work with the factory bumper. Reese says you must remove the bumper and Curt offers a pretty heavy 2" 15K rated where you can leave the bumper on. The Curt 2" goes to 16K with weight distributing. Curt doesn't recommend the 2.5" with the factory bumper.

Speaking of weight distributing, will a SRW 3500 or 2500 like the OP mentions handle OK with 1,500 lbs on the ball or would you need a WD hitch?

Curt has the same one I have for your GM. Look it up on Curt's site. It even uses the stock bumper holes as the factory one does. Here's a link:

Are u concerned at all about the Lippert axels on the trailer. Can't find any info about Lippert other than they make axels for the RV industry.

   / Trailer for JD 5083e #18
I would not be concerned about the Lippert axles. I worked in the RV industry for a while, and was impressed with the quality af all thier products.

What I would be concerned about is that much weight in a BP trailer. I tried it once with a Kub M9540 on a 20' trailer. That will never happen again. I have not looked up the specs, but I think that would be about the max towable rating for a BP trailer with a 2500. I would definently go with a GN trailer. May need more than 14,000 GVWR also. With that tractor and the weight of the trailer you will be pushing it.

I'll tell ya what. I have an 05 SRW 3500 cummins and a 20+5 Moritz gooseneck that I tow my 5083E with the loader and loaded tires. The trailer is rated at 14.5K and the truck has air bags under the rear. Please let me be clear.

DO NOT ATTEMPT WITH A BUMPER PULL WITHOUT A W/D HITCH!!! Even that might be mildly crazy, I don't know if I have ever seen a BP trailer for more than 12k lbs unless it was a pintle hitch behind a tandem towing a backhoe or dozer.

I have SWAGed my weight at around 10,500 when I picked it up, boy was I wrong.....
-Tractor-7,435lbs
-Loader-1970lbs
-Ballast(Mine has all 4 tires ballasted with Beet juice 12lbs/gal)-2328lbs

Total-11,733 w/ballast
Total-9405 w/o ballast

If your going to put the money into a trailer you might as well just get the gooseneck. It is a night and day difference how the trailer pulls and how your truck re-acts to the weight. If your planning on getting a GN, make sure you do some measuring/figuring. My combo fills my trailer pretty well but a brushhog would kill the rest of the space I have left on there. That loader is alot longer than people give it credit for. Just my $.02 Oh and the tuner sure makes pulling that weight alot easier!

I tend to agree with you. Even a 2011 SRW is only rated to tow 13K on a receiver hitch with WD and back in 2007 it was a little less, I think 12,400. A 12K BP trailer will be around 3500 lbs empty, so what can you load, under 9,000.
With a gooseneck you could pull a little more but then the trailer itself is going to be heavier. Also once you go beyond a 16K trailer the combo will be over 26,000 lbs, if that makes a difference.
