Hey all, I've never really posted here but use the forums all the time for help.

I've always wanted to restore an old Ford. So I have a neighbor that turns out has one in the woods behind his house. I'll post the pictures I took today of it and get y'alls input.

The gas tank went bad at one time so they fashioned up this rig to provide gas

I'm looking at a complete resto project that I can take easy and learn about old iron. The owner is a bit proud of it and is currently looking for 800$. I offered 400$ and we're going back and forth right now.

What I know it needs -

Engine re-done - owner says "it runs on 3 cylinders"

Not sure of hydraulics but owner claims they work great

Definitely needs new back tires - front are ok

Paint

Wiring

Once again, I'm planning on complete resto so I'm not really wanting to offer much more than scrap value - am I being too cheap? Is the 800 worth it? It's been sitting in the woods for years and they have no intention of doing anything with it so I am hoping they will see a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Thanks so much for looking and your advice gentlemen

Nice find

That looks like an alternator, and that means that some one did a 12 v conversion.

Thanks guys, and yes I meant alternator sorry I sometimes interchange those two. I may go up a bit on my price but what I have figured so far is that the owners definition of "works good" and mine are different.

I'm restoring a 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF tractor, about the same size and vintage as your Ford. Paid $1300 for a non-running tractor because I really wanted that baby for my collection (I restore old tractors with bull gear rear axles). It's a money pit-

No compression (4-cyl Hercules engine)--$800 parts, $800 labor (new pistons, rings, valves, valve seats, machine the cylinders 0.020" over, machine the crankshaft, machine the head, machine the flywheel)

Rebuild water pump ($120)

New clutch pack ($150)

New manifolds ($200)

Carb rebuild ($50 parts

I figure I'll have $4500 in that tractor before it's parade ready.

You'll probably have the same expenses for that Ford plus a good deal of sheet metal work (it looks pretty rusty from your photos). Fortunately, the sheet metal on my BF is in great shape.

Good luck

I think 800 is a little high. I have a Ford Jubilee that I've worked on some.

If it runs I may offer 650.00 if I really wanted it. It looks like it will need some major redoing. It all adds up quick.

Good luck!

by the way.. those raised casting numbers you referred to as a sae # and production code were neither.

SN were hand stamped..

for a naa.. it would read naa and then the sn.. no production code on that model.

a non runner rusted away int he woods is worth about 50-150$ at most, here in florida.

No kidding. Here in Wisconsin you'd think they were stuffed with diamonds, rubies, pearls and emeralds before being left to rot in the hedge rows...:confused2:

People are WAY proud of their junk around here.
