Roll pin removal---Any advice or tricks

PB Blaster is good and I use it because its easy to get but I have also used Kroil but Kroil can only be ordered from the manufacturer (well, unless things have changed). I just have been too lazy to order it but now that winter is here I may order some more now. Price isn't bad either.

Google Deal
NAPA sells Kroil now.

Fluid Film is not advertised as a penetrating oil but on Utube a sales guy says it is. Looks good and Kroil looks good as well! I'll have to pick some up. Advertised as getting into 1/millionth of an inch space! That's a heckofa claim.

I found Fluid Film for 10 bux a can free ship 3 can minimum...I bought it...

Last time I tried removing a roll pin, I broke a pin punch, and a drill bit. Ended up cutting the thing off with a hack saw. It wasnt important, I just needed to get that thing off in any condition.

I would tend to disagree

Last summer after I had received the free sample of FF from online, I looked around for something to test it on.
The only thing I could think of that was really rusted was my Reese Hitch Receiver, it was an 06 and I had not been able to remove it in at least a couple of years due to it being rusted together.

So I sprayed it, and then forgot about it.

A month or so later I was sitting on the tailgate talking to my girlfriend, and my feet were swing as we talked.

All of a sudden I realized that something was rattling when I hit it, and then knew it was the hitch in the receiver.

I put the tailgate up and low and behold, the FF had broke the rust loose, I had to work the hitch pin a little but the hitch came right out of the receiver.

Been a fan ever since.

I find gunk liquid wrench works really well for removing stuck parts.

Cool, I have never really tried it as a penetrant, and I know it sticks pretty well, so might give that a try.

I was thinking just as you are thinking about heating the nut to make it expand, except I was heating a hub trying to get the bearing race out. I heated and heated and beat the race and finally gave up. Then father-in-law came over who has a few/many years in auto mechanic. He started heating the race and I told him that does not make sense, he kept heating until it was almost cherry hot. He told me to give it a wack. Lo and behold it started coming out. He hit it with more heat, then I hit it with big hammer again. Not too long later it was out, never heating the hub directly. I told him it does not make sense but I will do it that way next time.

Never had to use heat on roll pins, just punch and PB.

Good luck

forget driving out a bearing race after heating it.. just cut it with the torch.. or even better.. weld it out.

a bead on the face of the race will shrink it and it will fall out. BTDT.. works awesome.

If you try cutting with a torch, how do you not damage the hub? I only had lots of sparks flying when I tried cutting metal with the torch. I'll have to give the welding idea a try next time too.
