WTH does that have to do with how quick your going to get shot because you waste time racking a round after confronting the thug?

i'm not sure I understand your question, nor do I understand your 'wth' hostility toward me?

I never stated to walk up to the thug and rack a round.

I stated that once you hear a thug break the window and crawl in and you grab the gun off the wall and rack it.. well.. you should assume he heard it.. and if he keeps coming, instead of ging back out the window.. then you know it's going to be bad.

A crook that enters a house, and finds it is ocupied and elaves is there to steal.. a crook that enters a house and finds it's occupied and STAYS, is there to steal, and possibly hurt you.

when he hears the rack from across the house, without ever seeing you, he lknows the house is occupied. that tells you what type of criminal he is.. a smash n grab guy, or a thug that is going to take your stuff AND maybee try for your life.

with that, respectfully, I'll no longer respond to your posts on this subject / in this thread. nothing personal.. just not interested in the confrontational manner of the comment as posed.

I'm tired of the fight mentality here.. Lotsa chest bumpers these days. I'm growing out of that and would rather just have a good discussion or debate... If I wanted a fight I could have stayed in the 'diesel fuel is a good rust preventer' thread.

No hostility just amazement that you of most all people woul be taking up for this premise. 'racking a round' to scare off a threat? Really?

well.. you should assume he heard it.. You assume they will even hear it.

So you are woke up in the middle of the night by the sound of breaking glass or worse just an awareness that someone is in your bedroom......and at that point your going to locate the shotgun, rack a round and announce 'ready'? The game would probably already be over at that point....for you.

As I was setting thinking about this thread, I remembered a couple situations that happened to me years back when i rented and lived in another city.

2 different occasions.

1, I came home and there was a robbery in progress.. car backed up to my place and 2 guys, carrying stuff out and putting it into the car..

1st..

I pulled in t he driveway real close to their car trying to block it in. when I got out of my truck, one of the guys.. BIG guy.. like a linebacker.. think.. 6'6" 300+ lbs here.. and i'm 5'6" and 125#, rushed me. I had a .38 tarus t85 tucked into my belt. i threw openmy jacket and laid my hand on the grip ready to draw it. that guy stopped so hard / fast, standing on his heels that he plows 2 furrows into my grass. jumped in his car and left with his buddy.

2nd..

was sleeping one night.. heard a scratching, faintly at a window in the next room. ( yes..i have excelent hearing ) I grabbed my colt anaconda .44magnum and stepped outside.. walked around the house, peered around the side of the house, and midways down saw the perp using a screwdriver trying to pry the window open. the faint sound I had heard was him removing the screen.

I slowly, cocked the hammer back on the anaconda.. and that was all that it took.. the perp dropped the screwdriver and ran out into the street and down the road. clearly my tv set was not worth him facing an armed homeowner.

that was then.

I no longer rent, but have built a house.

I have no windows in my bedroom.. so no perp will be breaking glass and entering directly into my room... they will have to come in thru another room.

that said.. I have 7 dogs. some in the house.. someon the porch nearest my bedroom, and some outside.

you can't get within 70' of my house without my dogs knowing.

That's how I know when UPS arives .. the dogs bark.. or when someone walks up agaist my back pasture fence 525' away.. the dogs bark.

when I come home at night.. the dogs bark.

thus.. wherever someone decided to enter my house at night.. he has to contend with the furry night watchmen, who, if nothing else..willlet me know someone is here.

my gun rack is above the bed, as soon as I sit up i have a 12g pump in reach.. I keep a good hi-brite, multi-led flashlight on the night stand.. also have a smith 38 there.. wife has the tarus 38 on her side and a flashlight.

by the time someone makes it TOO my bedroom door, they had better be bullet proof. My dogs will know there are there before they ever get close to the house. I'll know when they do get into the house..and when they get to the bedroom, thety will be on borrowed time, ready to enter the express check out lane.

16$ for 44# bulk dogfood don't seem all that bad once you add up some of the benefits... my boys are big and beefy too... have a couple small ones.. but the rest are nice 30- 50 -80-100# dogs..

Have bedroom walls built of concrete, Metal shutters on the window and a metal door that is locked when the room is occupied. Bad guy can't get at you.

Observe and record the bad guy on the high teck monitoring system installed around the house and in the house. Let the Police have the recordings and deal with bad guy. Lots easier than playing hero and getting hurt.

It'll also be a safe room in case of tornado's etc.:thumbsup:

Years ago a law enforcement agency transitioned from pump shot guns, which do make a distinctive sound when a round is chambered, to auto loading shotguns. The auto loaders were designed to make the same distinctive sound as a pump gun does when racking a road. This was a design point to let not only the officer, but people misbehaving, know a round was just loaded.

It seems reasonable to me, reasonable being an interesting legal term, that racking a round when hearing a thief in the house, could be very useful when articulating why the thief was shot.

Lulz. Thanks for the laugh. Autoloaders have a bolt, driven forward by a spring mechanism and backward by either gas or a recoil actuated system. Closing the bolt on an autoloader makes a distinctive sound, but you *definitely* don't want to leave the bolt back during storage much less when anticipating a CQB.

And if the shell jams in the elevator during racking -- at 2am, in the dark?

no metal shutters, because no windows. and most of the bedroom walls ARE concrete.. it's a block home with the bedroom in a back corner.. :) and there IS a metal door going into my bedroom.. I had the contractor use an exterior safety door with accompanying safety jamb and frame to make it kick 'resistant'.. and yes.. that means the bedroom has a seperate deadbolt too.. :)

When i did up the blueprints with the no windows and metal door and whatnot I got a few funny looks at the county office, when asked 'why', I said.. 'because it's my house'..

From a tactical perspective, never ever leave a defensible position to wander out into an unknown situation -- especially in the dark. If there is more than one intruder/assailant you are a sitting duck.

I slowly, cocked the hammer back on the anaconda.. and that was all that it took.. the perp dropped the screwdriver and ran out into the street and down the road. clearly my tv set was not worth him facing an armed homeowner.
From a legal perspective, just note that (depending on the state you reside in) you can be charged with murder/attempted murder if you shoot an intruder while outside your dwelling. In most states, Castle law protects you legally for defending yourself inside your home, giving the resident involved in justified self defense quite a bit of legal and civil protection. Florida law is quite broad in terms of legal protection of "standing your ground" outside of your dwelling, but other states are not so accommodating. In general if you shoot someone outside your dwelling, regardless of the nature of their illicit activities, you can look forward to a lot of legal issues and a hefty bill.

why leave it open.. rack it when you want to load a shell.

that's why I only use autoloaders for clay targets.. not for hunting or home defense.

I've lost ducks due to a shell jamb in an autoloader...
