Best all around gun?

Interesting twist this thread has taken. I think I would have a hard time sleeping in a windowless room. Not only do I love to have my window open at night to let the cool air in as well as the night/morning sounds, I would always want the fire escape but maybe if I lived somewhere that there is more of a threat of intruders I might feel different.

i'm the opposite.. I can't sleep if there is any light coming in.

as for fire escape.. I have sufficient legal egress as per county fire code.. and it's way easier to leave my room that way thru a door, than trying to climb out a window.

i was prepaired to do so when i came home and my apartment was being robbed. i just didn't get that far as the thugs came out to confront me.

when i got out of my truck, and approached, I had no idea if I would find armed intruders or not.. I pretty much 'assume' armed untill I see otherwise.

they broke in.. it's reasonable to assume the may have had tools. as far as I'm concerned, a screwdriver is a 'dangerous' weapon.. thus making them armed if carrying tools to break in.. IE.. hammer, prybar, screwdriver.. it it can poke a hole in me or make a knot on my head.. it's a deadly weapon...

by the way.. are you on the bad guy's side? Just asking.. due to the negative tone of most of your messages in this thread towards, at least me anyway?

Your assumption of negativity towards you personally is incorrect. I am just having a difficult time understanding your position on this as it seems very inconsistent from what I've seen from you otherwise. I'm asking questions to get a better understanding of your perspective. If it was someone other than you defending the same position I might just let it pass. Since, from reading your past posts, I expected different from you I wanted to discuss it more.

I have to laugh a little at your last comment.:laughing::laughing:

With a fully secure bedroom there will be little need to worry. One's body is not replaceable.:thumbsup:

You would think that would be pretty clear to anyone.

That depends on what other family is in the house.
I keep the chamber clear for safety reasons...it'll take more then just a trigger pull to fire it (meaning a deliberate pump of the slide).
Although there are a number of firearms in my home that are loaded, only the revolvers are ready for immediate discharge.

Works for me...

And you could die a horrible fan death, if you aren't careful!

OMG and to think of all the times I was risking my life by sleeping with a fan going!:confused2: Who Knew! Oh, wait I am not Korean!;)

on my shotgun on the gun rack i don't leave one in the pip just in case it fell off the rack while I was reaching for it... etc. it takes only a half second to rack the shell into place. if 5 won't do it.. 6 won't help. I do have a spare shell holder on the side.. if I need more ammo.. somehow doubt I would though.. unless a private army invades my house..

In a self defence situation you should always assume that one hand is going to be either busy fighting, holding the bad guy or incapacitated. There for, the weapon should be set up for one hand operation. If you can get 2 hands on the weapon before the bad guy gets to you then you will have time to rack the gun trying to scare him away.

You are correct bigtiller. From what I remember of the police academy, the closing distance is 7 yards/21 feet. Anything under this distance and you don't have time to draw or retrieve a weapon. It then becomes either hand combat or defensive/evasive maneuvers depending on the type of attack that you are encountering. Anything over this distance and you might be able to draw a weapon and use it before the attacker reaches you.

In other words, experts who have done the studies and research have determined that a bad guy can close a distance of 7 yards/21 feet before someone can act/react to the bad guys attacks.

So you are going to keep a loaded gun around for an emergency then depend on having time to racka round and hoping the sound if they even hear it are going to scare them away???

Why not just keep a tape recording of a dog barking and hope that works?

I keep passing this thread I posted this same answer earlier and I still come up in my mind a .22 pump or lever action tube fed rifle would be the best "all around gun" for me anyway.

Kids can shoot them well, wife's can too and they are good out to 100 yds in the right hands and they will kill a deer (dont ask) and a person can carry a lot of inexpensive rounds in a pocket. If I was to have to pick one gun that I could own of all of them it would be a .22 rifle w/o a doubt. just my .02 again :)

Lulz. Thanks for the laugh. Autoloaders have a bolt, driven forward by a spring mechanism and backward by either gas or a recoil actuated system. Closing the bolt on an autoloader makes a distinctive sound, but you *definitely* don't want to leave the bolt back during storage much less when anticipating a CQB.

And if the shell jams in the elevator during racking -- at 2am, in the dark?

Wrooster

Who said the bolt was left open?

That agency did NOT leave a round in the chamber when the shotguns were being transported.

I have never heard or seen a shotgun round jamming during racking. Combat loading, yes. Loading a round into the chamber, no.

Dan
