Best all around gun?

i'd not keep a blank in a self defense gun personally.. nor a rubber.. nor a slug..

but that's just me..

why leave it open.. rack it when you want to load a shell.
And if the shell jams in the elevator during racking -- at 2am, in the dark?

that's why I only use autoloaders for clay targets.. not for hunting or home defense.

I've lost ducks due to a shell jamb in an autoloader...

Have you ever had to go into a building where you knew there were intruders and that they may be armed?

Same here...4-5 rounds of low recoil buckshot for me.

The low recoil buckshot is because I have a pacemaker. BTW, if I hear something at night, or the dog raises a ruckus, I chamber a round as soon as I pick up the gun...I don't care if the intruder hears it or not.

Interesting twist this thread has taken. I think I would have a hard time sleeping in a windowless room. Not only do I love to have my window open at night to let the cool air in as well as the night/morning sounds, I would always want the fire escape but maybe if I lived somewhere that there is more of a threat of intruders I might feel different.

Why all this talk of the sound of a racking pump shotgun?

If the gun is for self defence there should be a round in the pipe at ALL times. And NEVER a blank. If you are going to squeeze the loud switch it is to stop a threat.

You would think that would be pretty clear to anyone.

i was prepaired to do so when i came home and my apartment was being robbed. i just didn't get that far as the thugs came out to confront me.

when i got out of my truck, and approached, I had no idea if I would find armed intruders or not.. I pretty much 'assume' armed untill I see otherwise.

they broke in.. it's reasonable to assume the may have had tools. as far as I'm concerned, a screwdriver is a 'dangerous' weapon.. thus making them armed if carrying tools to break in.. IE.. hammer, prybar, screwdriver.. it it can poke a hole in me or make a knot on my head.. it's a deadly weapon...

by the way.. are you on the bad guy's side? Just asking.. due to the negative tone of most of your messages in this thread towards, at least me anyway?

on my shotgun on the gun rack i don't leave one in the pip just in case it fell off the rack while I was reaching for it... etc. it takes only a half second to rack the shell into place. if 5 won't do it.. 6 won't help. I do have a spare shell holder on the side.. if I need more ammo.. somehow doubt I would though.. unless a private army invades my house..
