Problems with Neighbors dog .. What would you do?

However, do let your sheriff know what you're going to do...I think your neighbor is enough of a b**tard to claim you stole his dog.

+1 on calling the rescue groups. At least as your next response.

There is no animal control in this area.
30 years ago there was 1 sheriff and 1 State policeman.
Now there is so many cars with light bars on top and all respond to a call. looks like a parade. and the county keeps raising the taxes to support the need to keep them all.
Until need for a sheriff it better happen between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or no one available. forget to call during hunting seasons.
Lived here and owned property here for over 60 years only needed a sheriff 4 times still waiting for the responce.

Thats not really funny ... but for some reason I'm laughing ... I think sometimes I am not all together, if I have a problem I forget 911 and go directly to the folks and talk ... seems that I do most of the talking.

You do really need to know your state statutes and position of local Law Enforcement.

The last time I checked NC statutes on the subject, stealing a dog is a felony. So grabbing the dog and putting it on Craigs List or some such could set you up for a legal charge. Not likely but it is there in NC.

A dog chasing life stock is a legal target per the NC statutes.

I had to make sure what our statutes were as it's not something that comes up often. Fortunately I haven't had to in years, but when we were farming and raising cattle it was not unusual to have to do so.

I sure would hate to shoot a dog that seems to just like your home better than his. I bet they bet him or something for him to say "shoot the SOB" surly shows he does not care for his animals

There is no "rescue" in my county and the pound says I have to pay them administrative fees and what ever the cost is for shots!! Good news (for me)is the dog moved on to another neighbor place. I am hoping I don't see him again.

Oklahoma Statute

§ 41. Animals chasing or injuring livestock--Right to kill--Liability of owner--Court proceedings--Definitions

A. It shall be lawful for a person to kill any animal of the family canidae or the family felidae found chasing livestock off the premises of the owner of such animal if the person is the owner or occupant of the property on which the animal is chasing the livestock or if the person is authorized to kill such an animal by the owner or occupant of such property. The owner of any such animal that kills or injures any livestock shall be jointly and severally liable to any person so damaged, to the full amount of the injury done. The court, before whom a recovery is had for any such injury, shall declare the animal found to have occasioned the injury to be a common nuisance, and order the defendant to kill or cause to be killed, such animal within twenty-four (24) hours after the rendition of the judgment. Appeals shall be allowed in all such cases. Such appeals shall be prosecuted in such manner as prescribed by general statutes governing appeals.
B. For purposes of this section:
1. "Livestock" means any cattle, bison, hog, sheep, goat, equine, domesticated rabbits, chicken or other poultry and shall include exotic livestock; and
2. "Exotic livestock" means commercially raised exotic livestock including animals of the families bovidae, cervidae and antilocapridae or birds of the ratite group.
