How do you tie down tractors when hauling on a trailer?

Sometimes the "best you can do" really is only the "best you want to do".

Sounds like the case here.

Nah.

I just find that tweaking the Safety Police is one of the few things that make life worth living.

The only thing more fun is tweaking the Welding Police.

So, your picture was a joke?

Nope.

The response that I knew I'd get from the Safety Police was pretty darn funny though.

If only the REAL Police would show up as quick.........

So I didn't cut that chain under tension on a sharp object?

Maybe if it was in an extreme pinch point from heavy machinery and not a 3500# tractor, or it was a light weight chain not meant for the application. If you are talking about a 5/16 or 3/8 grade 70, no.

It was 5/16 high test, american made and not pinch point.

This doesn't compute because we use the same chain secured to the lifting eye of a 320c cat excavator extracting old timber pilings that would not budge with the excavator standing on its idlers and it holds. It may stretch, but not break. I find what you are saying hard to believe, let alone you comparing its abrasion resistance to nylon straps which was my original point.

When I retired July 14 2007 I bought a new truck, a 2007.5 NBS GMC 3500 with a Duramax.
We decided the wife needed a better building for the Fruit and gift shop, and I needed a Shop. I live in Rock Creek, and I went to an auction and bought a Furukawa Loader FL35 it will handle 1/2 yard of rock. We figured out the amount of loads I would need to remove, it worked out to about 100, and loads I had to bring in about 15, the supplies I needed to get about 15 . I used it to haul cement saving me a grand in pumper costs, and we bought a 14 ft PJ dump trailer. It will take the loader with no problem, it has 2 of 7,000lb axles and I loaded it many time above that, I hauled 20 ft wood with it, it paid for itself many times over. And now I kept it because it is unbelievably good for hauling wood, and I can rent it out, for people doing home renovations, hauling gravel or top soil, I even move vehicles with it.
If I had to pay someone to haul the stuff, when building, It would have been twice the price at least and I still have them. It cost me about $10,000 each Canadian when the dollar was at 65 cents.

Aczlan mentioned the correct federal DOT requirements for load securing. Its proabbly best to mimick them, even for private use to avoid any issues with DOT and in case liability due to a possible accident. Don't forget that the loader and implements must be seperatly tied down as well. I personally use chains for the tractor (2) and straps for the equipment. This usually equals out to be a minimum of 5 points of attachment.

Now, Nunyabinis got a ribbing, but you can learn a good lesson here:

- Tie down your machine properly; and
- Never post a picture of it loaded!

Best of luck!

On my dump trailer I did install two hold downs at the front corners. I use chains to tie equipment from the back and straps to tie it forward.
You guys are right about the DOT, you do not want to ever want to give them a reason to pull you over. What ever you are tying down, it is always better to have extra, and over-sized than to few and to small.

This may be overkill, but it's not hard to do or expensive.

Tie down four corners, 3/8 G70 chain, 4 ratchet binders of the same rating, nylon straps on the loader bucket and whatever is on the 3 pt.

I don't go far but, it makes me feel safer.

Still might be able to find flaws in my set up :)
