Had to testify a couple of times in theft cases when I was a PI for some cargo airlines. In one case, the defense attorney tried up and down to trip me up or paint me as some sort of bully or self styled super cop (in relation to recovery of the items which were mainframe computers I had tracked down). I did well, at least the prosecutor thought so, but in the end the perps got off, but that was due to a technicality unrelated to my involvement.
Another time I had to id a guy (**** skinhead punk) who stabbed a fellow in a dark hallway during a New Years Eve fracas in a dark stairwell. Fortunately I had got a decent look at his face, so was able to pick him out from a couple of dozen photos the detective brought up to my apartment. Didn't have to testify against him since they had even better witnesses, which included the fellow whose liver got sliced up that night.
The best thing is to write out a timeline of what you remember exactly, without any elaboration, emotion or supposition. Like Jack Webb would always say, "Just the facts". Of course if you are in the line of fire for some reason, get a good lawyer.
