It depend on how much ground is being tilled. I worked on a vegetable farm that had a brand new KK tiller and by the end of the year it was all beat up. It seemed like it had thin metal, it was all dented up and bubbled out from hitting rocks. Now, to be fair it was about 13 tilled acres that it was used on, and there were rocks, despite my efforts to remove them before I tilled. I worked on another vegetable farm that was three times the size, and same ammount of rocks. They had two tillers, one was an old Howard tiller, and the other was a new Maschio. I worked there for three years and those tillers were worked hard. They seemed to have heavier metal, no dents or dings through out the years. Now, I didn't price it out but I wouldn't be surprised if those tillers cost a pretty penny. If that is the case, and if he is only tilling a garden patch, I think that the tiller that your buddy got will be a fine tiller. But if he is using it for large acreage it may not last very long.

The King Kutter seems to be a pretty good buy looking at how it is put together and from results from people who have them. Most people like me use them ocationally for a garden or whatever, and never used daily. Either way, they are up to par with the rest at a good price. Speaking of that, I am sure alot of the members in texas are not aware if you have an Atwoods store close by, you can receive a 10% disount for sernior citizens every tues. and that helps with the price of a tiller or anything else. Just something to pass along.

It seems some of the older tillers had less tines and more space between the tines and metal cage so rocks had more room to bounce around in there. The KK seems to fill the space with more tines than some of the others. When you lesson the free space rocks are going to be a problem. I don't have hardly any rocks so the tiller works fine.

We don't have rocks here, we have to import them from China.
We have a used Howard tiller that is a tank. It weighs 400 lbs more than most tillers of equal size and costs 5 times more when new. We found it at a county auction. The highway department uses Howards and Kuhns brand tillers. A local farm has had very good service with a Malletti on 10 acres of sandy soil. In machinery advance metalurgy is important. Some of the worlds new emerging economies are not yet up to speed.

Based on reviews of King Kutter tillers, I planned on buying a six footer. TSC had advised several months ago that their County Line tillers were made by King Kutter and that they would be on sale "next spring", which is now.

I stopped by the Nixa, Missouri TSC and looked at their County Line tillers this afternoon. Their five footers were on sale (they were all yellow). The six footer was yellow and black and was of a completely different design than the five footers.

See attached picture of the 6' County Line tiller. It has a sticker on it that says Behlen County and the brochure in the tube indicates it was made by Behlen. There was a lot of rust on the unit, particularly on the black painted parts. (There was no rust on the all yellow five footers).

I went inside to inquire, in that I only wanted a King Kutter. The manager told me that about 9 months ago, Behlen bought King Kutter. I told him that the unit was of a completely different design from the yellow five footers. He advised again that it was a King Kutter but they improved the design and that was why they were different.

To put it politely, I was skeptical. We then drove to Orschln's, where they had branded King Kutter II 6 foot tillers that were all yellow and completely different from the so called King Kutter at TSC.

The KK at Orschln's were regularly $100 more than the Behlen's at TSC, but luckily they were on sale for $120 below list and they took off an additional five percent senior discount.

Bottom line is that unless I am wrong - and I certainly have been before - the TSC manager looked me in the eye and lied to me. They won't get my business anymore.

I bought the King Kutter at Orschln's.

A lot of time these managers and employees at stores don't know anything about the products they are selling...
Not taking up for the guy, but I have found that to be the case in many instances...

Just for conversation on buying from a non servicing type dealer can bite you-

My new KK2 6' tiller had a tine shaft leak at the gearbox and I called Orchelins where I bought it and they said they dont repair them just sell them!!! :confused2:

So I said well I am not working on it for free its brand new for crying out loud people so I asked them to call KK and ask them what to do.

KK said they would send them the seals and pay me $50. Baloney I said I will let it leak and add to it as necessary. It only leaks when I use it and it stops when I do so it could be worse I thought anyway.

Well after the last time I used it the leak has apparently gone away and its full of grease so either the seal finally seated or the paint is wore off whatever least now I can use it w/o working on it yea me and like I said I do like it a lot even when it had the leak. fwtw

We have a Female manager and she has helped me with my lawn care products..I did like their birdseed, now it has jumped up quite a bit in price..

Here locally, These type stores take a semi load delivery of machinery and take back to the factory 1/2 a semi load to be reworked for very small to very major problems. These box stores don't work on anything and order parts on demand and usually stock no parts. If you are good at mechanical work and chasing down parts, Box stores are the way to go. Ken Sweet
