Mahindra Max 28XL or Kubota B2920?

   / Mahindra Max 28XL or Kubota B2920? #31
heres my observations and questions

the kubota bx 25 is a proven piece

the max series is brand new ,is it wise to buy the first year of production before all the bugs and complaints are taken care of?

the bx 25 is cheaper than the max 25 tlb by a few thousand dollars in my area

does mahindra offer a five year warranty cause they know you will need it?

if mahindra is the number 1 in sales why do they have very limited dealerships? some states do not have even 1 dealer

Most of their sales are from out of the states. Mahindra is new to the US, but have a far reach elsewhere as they are a good tractor at an excellent price in my opinion. Don't get confused as they are not the number 1 in the US, but worldwide. Unfortunately for me, I have no idea where my closest Mahindra dealer would be.

Yeah, the Mahindra sales lead is worldwide, and much of that is in parts of the world where they have been the only (or main) game in town. They are a huge company that also builds vehicles and even airplane components. Just like many other global industrial companies.

In the US, they are a relatively new brand. In my area, Mahindra dealers are outnumbered by the other tractor brands, so it's just not an established brand like Kubota, Deere, etc. That may or may not matter to a given buyer, but I definitely felt better shopping Deere and Kubota.

Mahindra has been in the USA for about 15 years, so a relative newcomer. Just like JD has been in India for about 20 years, relatively new to India. As you would expect, JD has a huge USA market share and Mahindra has an overwhelming market share in India, which happens to be the largest tractor market in the world if I recall correctly. Mahindra sold more tractors in just India last year than all brands combined sold together in the entire USA. That is how large the Indian market is. And there are a lot of brands selling in India, it is a very competitive market.

No doubt Mahindras sell much better in areas with established reputable Mahindra dealers. There are lots of gaps geographically, and it just takes time to establish good dealers. JD didn't do it in 10 years or in 20 years.

Of course I am a big Mahindra fan, but I really respect JD and Kubota as top notch brands. I'll talk-up Mahindra, but I see no need to try to talk down JD or Kubota. We might argue back and forth about specs or something, but I won't bash them. They are worthy competitors.

Orange Man,

Now that many have showed the merits of a red tractor, would you consider another? I really like this one too! TYM 293

Makes me question system compatibility on the testing. Pressure relief issues or something, or an uncanny rarity of two bad pumps in a row? Seems extremely unlikely.

We are a relatively high volume Mahindra dealer and have seen just one hydraulic pump failure in the last 10 years, and that was on a 75HP tractor with some hours on it. Maybe we are lucky, and it is true that the smaller tractors only see on average of 100 hours a year, but I'd say our failure rate of less than 1/10th of 1% on hydraulic pumps certainly does not correspond with your experience.

I'm not questioning your truthfulness, but people should know that we simply do not have a trend of hydraulic failures with Mahindra, quite the contrary.

Dave,
During the testing we where running the FEL's up and down at a fairly constant intervals both loaded and empty. The cycle rate was much higher than a normal person would run an FEL. We never adjusted or touched the system relief valves. All we did was connect our system into the FEL lines. This testing made all of the machines run hot, my initial suspicions where that we just plain over heated the oil to the point it damaged the pumps and possibly other components.

Again, Mahindra could have addressed this problem on current models.

I have wondered the same. Not saying that it "cant" be done. But I think they either rate them with the rear chained down to something, or just use mathematics and calculate what to "rate" them at. Cause (talking this specific model) dont see how the Max 28 is going to lift anywhere close to 1400#. Again, comparing it to my 800# heavier tractor with 300# less lift capacity, I have loaded tires and a 1100lb 6' cutter that sticks back a ways. And it takes ALL of that just to get the loader to go into relief instead of raising the rears. You could put a 2500# rated loader on my tractor if you wanted and it would do me absolutely no good. because I cant get enough ballast reasonably to keep the back tires down.

So take the #'s with a grain of salt as I said. Because Most all tractors today can lift the back tires off the ground easy enough even with filled tires and ballast hanging off the back. So what good does any more lift do?? Other than look good on paper.

Just wondering also, anyone know the size of the cylinders on that MAX that is rated @ 1400# lift. Mine are 1.77" (45mm) diameter cylinders.

I am guessing the numbers are spot on because my Max 22 is rated at 900 pounds lift with the loader and I lifted a confirmed 1000 pound load, 100 pounds above the rated amount.

What did you have to do for ballast to be able to do that?????

I KNOW my loader is underrated a bit. I have lifted and moved my ~1400-1500lb propane tank. And I have a gauge on my lift-circuit. It took every bit of the 2200-2300psi to do it. No way would I even consider doing that with a tractor that weighs 800lbs less, and a loader frame that is built 300lbs lighter regardless of what the specs say. Even the Max backhoe only weighs ~600lbs. I honestly dont think it would do it. I think the wrong end of the tractor would lift.

I had my 600 Ballast box with probably 200 + pounds of chain to top it off. I'm not saying the tractor liked what I was doing, and it took some work to get it up, but I was able to do so. I won;t do that again either, but I wanted to test it out to see what it could do.

I try and stay out of these, but I don't believe it for second. They won't say how they are comming to this conclusion, but based upon the production numbers from their investor reports, they don't build nearly enough machines to make this statement across their entire HP range. If its true in some sense, its some narrow sliver of the tractor business, but they won't tell anyone what the criteria is.

Mahindra says they built 80-90,000 in the stock report (about 12k went outside India). The US market is 250,000 or so right?

...not trying to pick a fight, I'm just honestly intersted.
