Chapped, Dry & Cracked hands/fingers in the winter - What do YOU do about it?

Worked as a machine operator for many years and had very bad problem with cracked skin on fingers and hands. I thought all along it was the coolant we used to cool the parts and lubricate the cutting tools. Finally after years of fighting the problem I went to a dermatologist. Found out I was allergic to nickel. Started wearing vinyl gloves whenever possible. Now I have to wear gloves when working on equipment that may have fine particles of nickel as in oil changing. The problem with the gloves is they are a safety issue around moving parts. Also use the Corn Husker's when I can find it.

Bag Balm works for me.
Google Lee Valley tools if you want to find some, they sell it.

Try honey in some gloves overnight. I was told anything with sugar will work. I had badly cracked hands from tile work that wouldn't heal. After two nights my skin softened and the cracks closed up.

Bag Balm. Haven't tried most of the other stuff, but Bag Balm works. My nails crack & split, the skin at the corners of my nails crack, my fingers get dry. It's both a climate and age thing.

BB every night at bed time on all the affected areas, let it soak in for just a minute, then rub it in. When we have really dry weather, I use it in the morning also at a time when I know I won't be washing my hands for a little while.

Look for BB in a green can with old fashioned decoration.

BB works!

From what I read, BB is just vaseline with a few additives and cost is 3 or more times vaseline. So I'm I tightwad :) I can testify that vaseline works so well I can't imagine anything working better.

First time I tried this: Had one cracked finger tip and others headed that way. A week ago I headed out to the woodpile so slathered both hands with vaselien before putting the gloves on. No more problems after one application. Of course that pair of gloves does have a fair amount of it still inside.

Egon's definition of lanolin being known as wool fat is of course right. I don't know when they quit making it, but when I was a kid, I never heard of bag balm, but like most folks, we kept a can of Corona Wool Fat in the barn to use on the milk cow and another can in the house to use on humans.

And now, I just use Vaseline Intensive Care lotion on my hands and feet each night before going to bed.

My finger tips often crack and I use Super Glue to glue the cracks shut. It burns like t
He dickens when you dump the glue in the cracks but does make the heal up within a couple days.

Corn Huskers Lotion works pretty well and it is not greasy.

Bob, when I saw the message header Corn Huskers popped up in my head. Haven't thought about it in years. I have used it and it does work. I don't even know if you can still buy it. This time of year if your outside alot and working on machinery is when I was using it many years ago. Thanks for the memories. To the OP, it does work. The name reflects the condition of your skin before use.

Dave

Before antibiotics, and going way back to the Greeks/Romans, honey was used to heal wounds. Sugar works and was used as well.
