How to get rid of the red 1 by the ALERTS?

Even though I have read all my messages and replied to all of them, the red 1 remains next to my ALERTS indicating that I have a new message. Now I never know if I have a new message or not and keep checking it only to see there are no new messages.

How do I get rid of this 1?

Did you check all pages in your inbox?

Try selecting all, marking as read.

I found the problem. I had an unread message dated 12-31-1969 in my folder with no name of the sender. I marked it as read and the red 1 went away. The blank message is still there but I wonder what kind of glitch put it there. 1969??????
