Is it even feasible to run a post hole digger behind my tractor? I'll occasionally run into limestone -- do I just move around until I miss it -- or is there a way to break through?

You can buy rock bits but I think they are only for hydraulic drive augers, I'm not sure if I'd run one off of the PTO.

It doesn't take much HP to run a PHD. On the smaller tractors you might want to check to see if your three point will raise the auger high enough so it doesn't drag on the ground. I think the rock bits require a PHD with down force. I have never used a rock bit. Just a sledge hammer and a spud bar to get through rock.

Any suggestions on brand/model of PHD?

Colorado......

I see on the **************** forum (John Deere) they list your 4100 as a medium frame CUT (MCUT). Along with the JD755 (20hp)......
My JD855 (25hp) is listed as a large frame CUT (LCUT) I know there are a lot of compatable parts between the 755 - 855 tractors. They are very close to the same size.

I bought a well used Speeco PHD, I presume a full size unit, cleaned it up and it runs fine. However...... In my rocky ground I learned it is a good idea to make yourself a handle that you can bolt to the auger bit, in place of the PHD to un-screw the bit out of the ground........... It isn't hard to make one, it isn't hard to remove the bit from the ground, but of course a pain in the neck to take the time to mess with..........

Good luck.

I should have put my comment in context. I will only use it for a few holes -- maybe 50 over the course of the next 10 years. I might just get out the old clamshell digger for what I have now, but never hurts to keep an eye out on craigslist or clearances. I'm not sure I'd part with $700 to get the TSC special -- although after a workout with the clamshell I might have a new perspective.

There is no equal to Danuser. They will still be working hard when those little pukers from TSC, etc., have become boat anchors.

I can almost guarantee it :)

Would you pay someone $14 a hole to dig one or two of your post holes? If so, then go buy the PHD. I have over 4k in my PHD. I can dig whatever, whenever I want. I don't get sore, or bloody. Worth every cent IMO.

Just my :2cents: , well maybe a little more than :2cents: but you know what I mean. ;)

You can always buy used. Use it for what you need it for. Then sale it for what you paid or more sometimes.

Yeah.. going to keep an eye out for used. The TSC or Orscheln ones run 700 for the gearbox and auger. Can my tractor handle a 12" auger? I need to set hedge posts, so 12" is going to be a bit better than say 9".

I would call Danuser and ask them. If you tell them what your tractor is, they can tell you what will and won't work. This digger is rated for 20-40 horse. Compare it to the cheapies at TSC, etc.
