Do you wave?

Had a co-worker spot me one year with a trash bag cleaning up the roadside in front of my place. He told me I reminded him of the Indian with the tear in his eye in that old commercial. I got a chuckle out of that.

The guy that played the Indian was Jewish! LOL

Because years ago, it used to be a smal community of Jeepers, and most used them a lot more than now either on the trial, or the ranch.

In the late 60's and early 70's, all of us Flatfender folks waved(even though we were in a Ford GPW...).

Even when Dad got the CJ5 in the early 70's, it was that way. Seemed to get hit and miss by the 80's for a while.

We never waved to Land Cruisers though....

We have had a jeep wrangler for about 12 years and wrangler drivers wave at each other. My wife and I have talked about it. Don't know why.

I remember as a teen working at an Amoco station on Rt 17 south just below the Virginia line in NC. In the fall and spring we got a lot of Canadians from the Montreal and Toronto areas. Most of those from the Toronto area were very friendly, outgoing and were wavers, most of the Quebecer's were just the opposite. Very aloof, and not friendly as a rule. Some were exclusively French speaking so I understand that to a degree, but the difference in the those from Ontario and those from Quebec was day and night. Being an old country boy we just thought they were snobs! :D

When I lived in S. FLA there was a bumper sticker that asked every person returning to Quebec to carry two New Yorkers with them. People from Quebec were not friendly and were horrible drivers. Which is saying something given how many retired people were/are driving on the roads in S. FLA.

We wave. I was shocked as a city boy when first working in a very rural part of KY and people would wave as we drove to/from the farm!:confused3: :laughing::laughing: Now we wave around our neighborhood. Most wave back but there are a few that do not. :confused3: If I drive out to the more rural part of the county, waving is much more common. Just a form of politeness. Seems like more wavers in pickup than cars though.

Dan

A little different in my neck of the woods. It's a rural area, but the road going by our property has a 55mph speed limit. If I'm out near enough to the road and recognize the car (by sight or if they honk) I will surely wave. If I am pre-occupied they'll have to honk to get a reaction. If I stood there to watch and wave at every car that went by, two things would happen, nothing would get done and my arm would likely fall off.

I gotta say though, the people around here are real friendly. Even if I'm not out there, a lot of them will leave something behind on their way by to make sure I knew they were there. It's not usually anything big, sometimes just an empty beer bottle or maybe a McDonnie's bag, but it seems that quite a few of them are kind enough to take the time out of their busy day, and hey, it's the thought that counts.

We must have some of the same neighbors, one left me an empty 6 pack the other week and some chip bags, bless their hearts! Gotta love nice people.

:laughing:I can sympathize with the trash and beer cans along the road...Sometimes it's like they're having a contest to see how many cans of brew they can put away and throw out the window before they get home.

the road my farm is on.. people love to leave trash on the roadside.. :(

We have a private road that used to be open to the public until I put up a gate. I am still picking up trash that I find.....

Later.

The next time you're driving down a lonely country road, look out into an empty field, honk the horn and wave wildly. This is more fun when you have passengers.
Seriously now, around here it seems that some people will look you over carefully when meeting and simply won't wave if they don't recognize you or a very feeble wave at best. I have noticed that people often wave when meeting them on my tractor or even riding a bicycle.

Now I'm surprised you Jeep drivers are amazed at the comradery.
It's no surprise, it's because you are RUBICON RATED

Certainly an elite few, ready to crawl over Mt. Barstool.
Actually when not being driven by teenage girls, CJ drivers are usually
pretty good. I wonder how long it takes before the whine of those M/T's
drowns out the ever important Ipad tones? Daddy I need a new car.

I think the new large Jeep SUV with the larger VM Motori diesel has the potential to be a real
slam dunk. I think a 2 litre diesel like the Audi/VW clan has would do nicely in a CJ.
I drove the Passat diesel and was thoroughly impressed with the torque and the fact it really did
accelerate. Now almost double that torque, and even with creeper gearing, that kind of light throttle
torque must be fun to drive off road. But it seems that anything "nice" costs fifty grand anymore. Yikes.
Ok forget the Bar M genuine hides, but getting into any diesel truck recently has been just too expensive for many
of us. But get me 28mpg on cruise at 70, and I'd sure pay a couple grand extra for that.

And yes, a gas burner can do close to that, but it's a wheezer with a 2.50 rear that's about as exciting to drive
as your refrigerator. I want to play and not pay...what else.

My first wife wanted me to get a waving bobble head doll for the front windshield, she figured it would save me a huge amount
of energy because I was always waving down town. And if you waved at the wrong person, you'd likely get a wave and a smile back.

Or Land Rover Series/Defenders - I've never seen a Jeep driver wave at me in my Defender.

I've always thought that the "I see you drive the same car!" wave was interesting in that two people who don't even know each other and who might be at extreme opposites of the political spectrum and couldn't even discuss politics without getting into a heated argument-- could share a friendly wave based solely on the vehicle they drive. Probably even have a pleasant conversation about what they drive and related topics.

Makes one wonder just how much more congenial the world would be if folks could just agree to disagree and move on to actually get to know one another-- politics aside.

Having owned a '75 Land Cruiser for twenty years, I could probably count on one hand the number of times another LC owner did not wave as they passed by, no matter where - city or country. Waving to Jeep owners - never.

Almost all my neighbors wave on our shared country road. I take care of the road with my Kubota (free of charge) and those who pass by while I'm working the road and do not wave are definitely off my Christmas list.
