In Tennessee:
You must have a CDL to operate:
Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more. Any combination vehicle with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds, if the trailer(s) has a GVWR of 10,001 or more pounds.

So, you could have a truck with 26k GVWR and a 10K trailer to tow legally.

Thats not quite how its worded. You must have a CDL if: The TRUCK GVWR is over 26k OR if the TRUCK GVWR+the TRAILER GVWR (aka GCWR or gross combination weight rating) is over 26k AND the trailer GVWR is over 10k.
So a 15k truck and a 11k trailer is fine, as is a 16k truck with a 10k trailer, but a 16,001# truck with a 10,001# trailer is not,

Yes, you would not need a CDL in America.

Period

A DOT number is required inter-state, and sometimes required intra-state.

The Federal standard requires States to issue a CDL to drivers according to the following license classifications:

Class A -- Any combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Class B -- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.

As Duffster pointed out a straight truck of exactly 26K towing a trailer of exactly 10K would not require a CDL

You'd have to be completely insane to tow that much with a light duty truck!! People seem to always overlook stopping safely.

That much weight being towed often, go medium duty.

I like your opinion and will disagree Sir. I along with many others in the US have made a living pulling loads with our trucks. Apparently you are not educated in the light duty truck market and what they can tow legally tow. I actually have current argument going, that if I am wrong on..will increase my $$

Apparently you have never priced a medium duty, as an FL can be had for slightly less money than a loaded Ram/Ford/GM!!

And not only that, but the medium duty will be working long after it is paid for, unlike the light duty truck.

They can tow more weight safely, are not maxed out on every tow like light duty trucks are, stop safer, and are a true heavy truck, not a light duty which is under built, but grossly over priced!!

A friend if mine hauled RV's, after a while, his 1 ton (not mentioning brand, no need for a war.) started costing him major dollars, made the profit margin slim, has looked at many medium duty trucks, seem to pencil out better over the ling haul.
