Using barbells to make implement weight brackets----with photos

The problem was that I needed weight on the front tongue of an implement that I transported. It is heavy--4,000 lbs-- in the back and fish-tails. Last year I strapped on two 55 lb or one 100 lb front end weights but they slid around and were a hassle to remove at my destination and more grief to put them back on. Even 55 lbs is heavy for me now.

So I stumbled onto a set of barbells with lots of weights---for $20!-- at a thrift shop and made a weight bracket that can hold the weight and is easy to add or remove whatever I want. It came out well enough that I'm going to make brackets for a couple other things I have. Plus, anyone could easily use this simple method for front end weights or maybe even small wheel weights if you had the holes centered.

I cut 11" off each end of the barbell and had a local shop punch a 1" hole in the center of a 5" x 7" x 1/2" plate to receive it. They also punched some u-bolt holes. I welded the stub a little shallow in the hole so it laid flat and put a little weld around the top of the plate as well.

After the plate is on, a round adapter plate (photo) goes on to keep the weights flat but it also spaces up for U-bolt clearance. Then you slide the weights on and use the locking tube with the small hand screw. I haven't used it yet but am confident it will work well. The 25 lb weights are easy to lift and the setup is simple to add more or remove at my destination. I also have 10 lb and even 3 lb weights but four 25 lb weights does the trick for me..

This is not difficult and is an easy and fool proof way to add weight and put it where you want it. It's not the quality or creativity of a 4shorts job but it works for me and was a cheap fix to a difficult problem. FYI.

Well my friend that's pretty crafty. Looks great and works well, can't get much better than that now can you. Nice clean work to. Nice work. Enjoyed seeing it and thanks for posting

Nice work. I made wheel weights using the same idea. I added about #120 per wheel. Not quite as heavy as filling the tires, but it was a fraction of the price.

Agreed...it is a surprisingly cheap way to add weigh to implements or even front end weights but you just have to think outside the box for ways to mount things. Factory looks the best but for situations where that is not possible, these weights are the perfect solution. Any photos of your weights?

Wow, just saw you are from Eddington...I spent nearly 30 years near Bangor. Miss it a lot but not late winter till ice out.

Nice job and yes it is an easy way to add weight. I have been using the 25# weights on my box blade the weights have a big enough slot in them that they will slide down the raised up rippers. I added 150#'s this way and it helps keep the box blade on the ground.

Good show!

I used barbells for weight on my rifle range rest and to hold gun powder dispenser on my loading bench and quite few other applications.

But I dont use barbells to build my muscles up :)

Here are the pictures of the wheel weights I added a couple of years ago. It has been a good setup and I have yet to add more weight. The current weight is #115 per side. That is about half the weight beet juice would add to the tires. I have been meaning to drill holes through the end of the 1" shaft so I could add lynch-pins, but I have not done it yet. I guess I will wait until I loose a barbell or two in the snow and find them with the snowblower. :D

ps: I might have posted these pictures before.

pps: Sixdogs, I lived in central Ohio until 1999. I do like Maine, I agree with you on that.

cz---After reading of some of your projects, I'll bet you already have the muscles. :D

Those are beautiful weights and a really first class job. Glad you posted the photos---it gives me another idea.
Barbells around here are dirt cheap and offer lots of possibilities. I picked up three more weights yesterday for 50 cents each.

Dumbells also work. These are 35#'ers. U-Bolted to the side of the bracket. 25#'ers fit above them.
