my y85 book page 1-3 calls for the conn rod bolts to be at 110 to 130nm and that turns into 81.131 to 95.883 ft lbs, do i have a old book or somthing, and the head bolts it calls for150 to 170nm or 120 to 125 ft lbs, i guess the middle of the spec for the conn rods would be 120nm and that came out to 88.507 ft lbs

for all the normal people out there that dont know the conversion from nm to ft lbs you can do it 2 ways first you can multiply your nm x .737562149 and that will give you the answer or you can go to this web site and just punch in the numbers Foot-Pounds to Newton Meters Conversion Calculator

I never like to feel a bolt get weird when I'm torquing it. That feeling of the bolt getting tighter and tighter until it then goes another quarter or half turn without getting tighter always makes me think something has stripped and it is time to start over with a new bolt - that's assuming that the bolt is going into threads that are tough enough not to be the culprit. If the threads are suspect, then I figure that I'm probably into having to helicoil them anyway so I go a little further to see what happens. This is called "destructive testing", I think. (grin) I just can't stand the suspense of thinking that one fastener might fail and screw the whole job later.

yea i was loosing sleep thinking my torque wrench was out of wack so first i took another torque wrench and conn both together and they both would click at the same time at the same setting and i tryed 8 or 10 diff settings, but that still didnt make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside so i went to harbor freight and they have what is called a torque adapter, is a led torque reader and they come with a certificate of inspection from a lab to show how accurate the one you bought is and the max they can be out and pass is 2% out, they do 3 pulls on it at 29.5lbs, 88.5lbs, and 147.5lbs, mine was super accurate at 29.5lbs it came in at 29.4 = 0.34% at 88.5lbs it came in at 88.3 = 0.23% and at 147.5 it came in at 147.7 =0.14% so mine is well under the 2% they calim, mine was well under 0.5% I was looking at torque adapters online and most run from 150 to over 300 for a good one hahha they did tests and found the harbor freight one is as good and lots of times better then the most expensive ones, and harbor freight sells them for 39.99 but they have a sale on them this month for 24.45 but you have to use the 20% off code that you can get online for one item only at harbor freight, or it will cost you 31.00 and it comes with a life time warranty, when i was there i also couldnt pass up a 1/2in torque wrench that is norm 39.95 on sale this month for 9.95, and its a really nice wrench it says its accurate to 4% and you could choose from a 1/4 3/8 or 1/2 torque wrench for the same price here are pics of todays finds

i forgot to add the torque adapter can be used as a torque wrench itself or can be used to test you old wrenches, it also comes in a really nice case with adapters for 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 . and the 1/2in torque wrench also came in a really nice case that looks like it was worth the 10.00 the wrench cost itself

well i went out to the barn with my new gagets and tested my old torque wrench and wow it was way off like 20ft lbs off then i tested the new harbor freight wrench and i did 3 pulls with it at 90ft lbs and it came in right on 90 once 90.1 once and 89.9 so that is pretty darn accurate, then i started cleaning off the intake ext and valve cover, the paint they use on there engs and parts is really crap, when i started to clean the intake it was all rusted under the paint it looked like it was rusty at the factory and they just painted over the rust so i stripped all the parts and then re-painted all of them here are some pics of the rusty intake and then it cleaned and the other parts painted, painting is allways the fun part of a rebuild, well to me it is hahah

well i went back out and was gonna put the last piston and sleeve in the eng but thought to myself man if that old torque wrench was reading 20lbs below what it should be reading then the bolts on cyl 1 and cyl 2 prob are not torqued right so seeing that cyl 2 was at the bottom of its stroke still from installing it last I was gonna try the new torque wrench on the bolts, well thank god i did i set it to 90lbs and it too felt weard and wanted to move but i thought to myself ok thats because it was 20lbs low but it didnt feel right it didnt feel like the pressure was getting harder so i said to myself ok im going to take this bolt out and the second i put pressure to take it out it went pop and broke, so i went and took out the other bolt, and poped out the piston and then started to get the broke off part of the bolt out of the rod, thank god with a few taps on the exposed threads with a punch it came out, so tomorrow im gonna order 6 new rod bolts and not worry about it, when this eng is done the only parts in it with 69hrs on them will be the crank, the cam and there bearings so i guess it will be a new eng again, ill add a pic of the broken bolt
