How did it get it's nick name?

Old Ironsides
The oak planking on the sides of the ship was so thick and hard, that cannon balls were said to bounce off.

In Venice there is a cathedral / church said to be supported by ????? number of wooden pilings. :mischievous:
About 1,000 years old. Any idea how well they are holding up. :anyone::scratchchin:

Dunno about the number but the pilings are in great shape. Most of Venice's buildings are built on pilings. Per the history channel (and what more authoritative source is there :)) submersed wood does not rot. What happens at the water line though is another matter - dunno how that can survive so long.

Titanic, Everyone should pretty well know that the Unsinkable ship sank on its first trip.

Crash it seems like the 4th stack was for "looks" or something.. I don't think it was functional. This is from memory.. I am itching to go google this one!

W/O Googling, I'm gonna say the fourth stack was either for looks or to mount the "wireless" antenna. OH, or as the air supply to the lower decks/engine room? Ya, I'm going with this one.

Speaking of wooden piles, the Tappan Zee Bridge in NY is also built on wooden pilings.

crash; I know NOTHING about ships, but is it possible that the 4th stack could have actually been an air intake, as opposed to a smoke stack?
