GM putting a small diesel in the Colorado and Canyon?

Of all those diesel trucks rolling off the production line. Just how many do you think reach 200,000 miles. Not very many. 500,000 miles? So few as in not's not worth considering. The chassis, body and driveline are done by 300,000.
I can drop in an entire new gas longblock from intake manifold, injectors to oil pan. For the price of just a high pressure common rail injector job on an emissions diesel.
Work? It's a light truck application, that isn't work. In fact the gassers now make more power than your beloved 3rd gen Cummins .
So do you drag race your truck and trailer full of cattle?

I'm only stating that Cummins diesels, pre '07.5 are tough, reliable engines.

The same parts that wear out on a diesel pickup wear out on a gasser too.

New gassers make more horsepower, but not the torque. They won't pull at 1500rpm. They drink fuel under load too.

And the biggest thing is that some people WANT a diesel. Hard to argue with that.

I've heard "sources say" so many times that I don't pay it any attention until the final say is in writing from corporate. For example. Look how early a finished prototype Camaro was in about every major car magazine. They even brought the car to several GM assembly plants for us to drool over. 2 years later we finally got a production model for purchase. The link I think does have some truth to it. I can see the small diesel making its way into the U.S. market as long as some stupid EPA BS does not allow it to happen due to it being a "truck". The Cruze is a great step in the right direction for GM's intro to small diesel powered products. I hope the sources are correct about our new small truck.

"WE" should just adopt the Euro emissions and crash specs. Would open our countries up to all the vehicles in the world market, plus save the automakers billions, maybe reducing prices we pay for vehicles. It'll never happen as much as it should though.

I TOTALLY agree.

They are VM engines.
i wouldnt pay the Diesel bonus for a VM... though i would have for an Isuzu... Fiat will hurt GM's brand image even more than the bailout did... :p

 You do know that GM and Fiat each have a 50% stake in VM, right?

What is so special about 1500rpm? Push rod diesels are cammed with such short duration in order to have enough compression pressure to start. They won't rev. The torque falls off by 1800rpm and the HP drops by 2200-2600rpm. A gasser will pull strong across the entire power band from 1500-5500rpm.
Ever look at the brake specific efficiency of a diesel at part load? Does your diesel make 345HP driving down the road or closer to 45HP?
Ever look at the fuel curves, torque and HP curve on the newer gassers? In particular the DI units?
We have people here stuck in the 1980's with carburetors, heat riser valves , automatic chokes with 148HP gassers. Comparing them to 6BT Cummins engines and thinking 1990's fuel prices with diesel cheaper than gasoline. Last time I looked it's 2013 with 2014 vehicles on the lot.
Does a diesel burn more fuel under load?
Do 'WANT" the diesel repair bill to keep the emissions equipment operational? Ever price a replacement set of Common rail diesel injectors at the dealership?
Are you driving a light duty road vehicle? Or are you running an irrigation pump flat out 24/7 ? Two totally different applications and duty cycles. For some reason you think your pickup idling at the Quicky Mart, idling at the stoplight or cruising on the highway is maxed out.

So it's ok to have a Japanese diesel in your GM vehicle instead of an Italian diesel?
The VM diesel is used by GM, Opal, Ford, Chrysler ,Daewoo and those London England taxi cabs.can't be all bad at least the engines not choked and over priced due to the EPA .

I work at the dealership! Haha

I'm not sure anyone buys a diesel because its cheaper. They buy it because they want it.

Diesel is like 10c/l cheaper here as it should be for a less refined product than gasoline. That savings adds up and makes the case for diesels.
