Teflon tape on hydraulic connectors?

We use both, got tired of fixing leaks. A few weeks ago we built a $100k power unit and the company we built it for had there hands do the labor for the piping. I strongly suggested them to use both they declined and to me their boss said no tape! I don't argue with people anymore, so I let them do it. I fired the unit up and even the charge pressure fittings leaked. Got some heat into the unit and at 3000psi it was leaking badly at 5000psi most fittings had a steady stream coming out of them. Guess who fixed it. They did and on a Saturday and taped EVERY fitting. And I did NOT help, told them I would see them on Monday. Like I said done arguing with people. CJ

So do you put the paste over the dope or on both sides? There is a lot of discussion about this at work about our steam lines. It's only 175 psi but about 350º and I find that either by itself is adequate.

We tape over dope when things get serious.

I only use RITELOK HP45. I usually get it in 50 ml bottles. Depending on thread size, only a few drops are required.

HydrualicStore.com HP45

They will ship USPS if you ask them. When I get fittings and sealant from them I just say if you can ship in a flat rate box, please do that.

I use tape over dope on larger fittings. Like 1-1/2" and up.

But still never on hydraulics. Never had any issues with leaks. Sometimes I use paste with PTFE, and other times I use the loctite non-fouling stuff. (I cant remember the number) but its purple.

Never had to use tape to get something to not leak. Unless using old fittings that have been used hundreds of times or are damaged.

Honestly, I wish they would do away with NPT fittings for all things hydraulic. ORB and JIC are the way to go.

Teflon tape is a no-no for hydraulics.Use paste dope.

Saw a name brand hydraulic valve at the local farm store and it had a sticker on is saying warranty void if teflon tape is used.

I just had a WR Long 3rd function kit installed at the FEL with U.S. made 1/2" flat face skid steer connectors, along with its other fittings, to mate with a WildKat grapple rock bucket, also using U.S. made connectors. All were installed with tape and work perfectly- no leaks that I have noticed.

For many years I have used tape on any type of wet or dry connection, gasoline- hydraulics, water, air, etc., never with an issue as long as I did my part. Of course, I have also never had a fitting that prohibited the use of tape and would use something different in this case.
