As I recall, the axle housing on the green version is short; the axle housing on the red version extends to a couple of inches from the hub.
I don't know whether parts for the green version are hard to come by. Perhaps someone here can comment. Considering the age of both versions, the condition of the individual tractor is probably more important than the original color.

I'll have to defer to the guys with a 1500. It does appear to have some odd ball muffler on it

It definitely looks to be a 1500 (Green) that has been painted to match the 'newer' red color scheme. You can see the Yanmar Green under the red in several places on that tractor, as well as the original black under the spruce green on the transmission case and axles.

As other folks noted, the brake covers are a good way to make a good identification between green and red models. The clutch housing on my YM1500D is made of stamped (smooth) steel whereas the red models have a cast housing (part number '1' on this parts break-down: YM1500GCLUTCH).

After 35+ years, the difference between green and red is about like front distributor vs side distributor on a Ford. You can find parts for either, you just need to be specific when describing it.

But trade your Ford for it? This is a big step down in weight and pulling power. I have a YM186D that is approximately equal to the 1500D in capability. These are both good small tractors. Maneuverable, yes, but I feel like I'm always struggling for traction discing or pulling my watering trailer on soft ground. The Ford would handle these tasks as if there were nothing attached on back. If the Ford is too big and clumsy for your application this is a good trade (assuming equal condition). And the Yanmar will run for years without the fiddling a gas engine requires - probably a welcome improvement for you. But be sure this small tractor is suitable for your intended use.

These are all correct and also the diff housing has short sleeves, the red 1500 goes towards the rim another 6"/8" a side.

Thanks, after many years of back problems i have scaled down all our activities and only have a 7.5 acre piece of ground now, (about 3 of it in woods) so i mow about 4 acres of grass and plow/till a small garden, pull a box blade to smooth out the driveway, maybe a post hole every now and then and thats about it. so i think a small tractor will work ok. i just had concerns about getting parts and reliability of a yanmar since i never touched one before and know nothing about them, thanks
