I guess I should ask the question, Do I really need 72" wide for grappling tasks?

How wide are your tires I tried to stay almost as wide as my tire stance, but some like them narrow.
close to 7' wide

It depends on your main use. You can pick up wide stuff with a narrow grapple.I guess I should ask the question, Do I really need 72" wide for grappling tasks?
Let me make a quick suggestion. Go rent one and try it then you will know what works and what doesn't. I found the narrower L shaped ones do better for what I want to do than the C style ones. If you are carring brush and raking then the wider C style ones work great. But if you are digging and pushing out trees the narrow ones give less stress to the loader and the L shaped ones work great for breaking roots and carrying stuff. I have a friend that wants my 48" econograpple that I modified and when I replace it, I will either build one or buy one that is 48" wide again but that opens wider. That is the only issue I have with the 48" one I have now. I had to beef up the mounting point of the cyl but that is minor to me. CJ

thanks for the review...did you pay over the 2500 quote I got from The Rake Shop... thats the upper end of my budget. I like the 48" vs 36" opening much better.
Well with the size of your tractor and the lift capacity I would probably go wider because it will help balance longer wider loads, but I think 60" 5' would be fine.
Question what is a euro quick hitch I have never heard of that?
I paid less, but that was 2.5 years ago. I'd be curious if they would build a light class with a 48" opening / 60" wide / dual jaw. If you happen to inquire, please advise on the answer. Thanks!
Well that's different, same idea different way of accomplishing it. Is this style of quick hitch hard to get implements for are they more expensive? I only ask for my own knowledge because I have never seen one or even heard of it (which means nothing) the only other style I have ever heard of was the JD type and from what I have heard they are more expensive. Like I said only for my own knowledge I just like to be informed of different ways to do things.
implements are not near a prevalent as SS style but you can find them and they do usually fetch a premium, I have plans to set both my tractors up with a SSQA but who knows how long thats going to take me!!
60 acres is a lot to clear. Not sure how many trees per acre but if it is more than ten or twenty I would worry more about the wear and tear on the FEL from dozing all that land than I would about a grapple choice. If you are just transporting uprooted trees, then the smallest lightest cheapest grapple is more than adequate to carry even 60 acres worth. No advantage to wide or heavy duty. However, even with a bigger heavier grapple, 60 acres of pushing and digging is a lot for any tractor FEL. They are designed primarily to lift, not push. We all use them to push and dig but it would be better to knock all those trees down with a dozer or track loader and then use a light duty grapple on the tractor to collect and cart the downed trees off to a burn pile.
