my son works for a sherman williams paint store and yes they will be open on thanksgiving day! Last thing I would do is paint on thanksgiving day.

My wife has always worked in retail, and I have seen the long term trend to open earlier before the holidays, and stay open later during the holidays, the only thing left was to open on the holidays. Sadly, that has now become the norm.

I am not much of a family man, but I understand it. People who shop on Thanksgiving, and Christmas, are Scrooges little helpers, responsible in part, for many families not being able to be together. In some cases perhaps maybe even for their last time.

Do onto others, and give them a break, stay home for one day. Retailers will eventually get the picture.

Let's face it; probably most of us here don't view shopping as entertainment the way some people do. I feel that there should be a few days per year where all "nonessential" people should be free to spend time with their families or as they see fit... as a matter of principle if I'm travelling I always ensure that my gas tank is full on the night before, and except for a cup of coffee make sure that I have all of my needs.

With exceptions... :D

Christmas Eve 2004 I was on my way home after being gone for 2 weeks when my transmission failed unexpectedly. I caught a ride home but Knew I would be spending the holiday alone. The next day it was a rainy crappy Christmas, but after watching my lab unwrap her box of treats I didn't want to go through the day without seeing anyone and knew that the local storeowner was open for a few hours for forgotten items; so I hopped on the 'Bota, headed up my road then a mile down the highway to join him for a cup of coffee... tire chains jingling like bells as I went.

Like the OP stated, I can also remember when Stores were closed on Sundays and Holidays. But in retrospect, some Employees rely on the extra pay or Hours that working on Holidays affords them, just so they, themselves can afford to purchase the Fixings for a Holiday Meal. Just a thought. BTW, when Store Employees wish ME - Happy Holidays - I always counter with "MERRY CHRISTMAS". I fully understand that the Company sets the rules for the Employees, but PC isn't my Cup Of Tea.

I think it is just a sign of the changing times. Internet shopping is open 24/7/365. If the brick and mortar stores don't make themselves very available they will lose business to the on line stores.

If you watch football on Thanksgiving, you are watching advertising from stores. There is no getting away from it. Doesn't bother me.

If stores are not open on Christmas day, when will procrastinators buy Christmas presents?

My girlfriend worked at Pizza Hut on Thanksgiving night while going to college 30 years ago, so that's not anything new this year.

Jeez ain't it time to get married? :D
