farmgirl--They are probably shaped that way for shipping efficiency. I'll bet you can get lots more in the same space.

No doubt these are more efficient to ship, but it seems like the designers forgot one of the purposes of a jug is to let you "pour" the contents easily. I imagine the next generation will just be a pouch in a box, and then let the customer figure out how to deal with that....

I remember my college cafeteria used to get milk in huge pouches that would load into a dispenser. That 5 gallon pouch of chocolate milk sure impressed the heck out of me....

I will have to say I have never actually seen one. We buy our milk in the 1/2 gallon carton, and it has a convenient cap and pour spout. It works very well. But after reading the instruction about leaving the new carton on the counter and rocking it over into the glass, I believe I could handle it.:) And they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. HA!

Up in Canada it is available in 1 liter pouches. Same down in South America (its only available in those down there).

Worked at a hotel that had those. They make a BIG mess if you accidentally pop the cap off when loading a new one into the machine...

The trick with the pouches is to buy the plastic pitcher they fit in. Even so, the first bit of the pour can be tricky since the plastic wants to sag down from the weight of the milk. We used to buy them, they're the same price as the plastic jugs, so for convenience we just get the jug and are done with it.

Those do look tricky to pour, especially if you have older hands.

Yep. I used to use a cut off 2 liter bottle to put mine in when I was down in Argentina. I would cut it off to ~3/4" below the top of the bag.

they have been using that style of jug in the bulk food industry for a while now... larger ones too.
