How do you pour milk from the new square jugs?

They tell you the primary reason is environmental, because they can fit more jugs in less space, less trucking costs, no milk crates, etc.... but let's face it.... its all about profit and the environmental benefits are just coincidental. Anyhow, I've always been surprised at round containers for liquids. I know they're strong and easy to manufacture, but the waste of space has always been obvious. I see someone is coming out with a retrofit spout for the square jugs. Kind of like retrofit spouts for the environmental gas can spouts that don't pour worth a hoot.

The material handling savings are huge. No one at the store level will be touching each and every gallon of milk, it's all palletized from the truck to the display case. Plus the higher density shipping as noted in the article. The only time store workers would need to touch it is to rotate the stock by expiration dates, which might be as simple as turning the pallet around and shoving a few cartons forward for the most part.

In the old days (1960-70), the milk delivery truck went from store to store. The driver used a metal hook to drag stacks of milk crates to the back or side door of the trailer. Then some schmuck standing on the dock picked them up off the truck floor or the driver handed them down, and made two-wheeler hand cart stacks on the dock. Those got wheeled into a walk-in cooler.

When it was time to fill the dairy case, the crates were sorted into stacks of what was needed while in the cooler, then wheeled out into the aisle. Every carton, from 1/2 pints to gallons, was picked up and placed in the display case by hand.

We only use 1/2 gallongs which are square but pour easy. My solution to pouring from big jugs is to keep a small jug and refill that with a funnel. One of the greatest ever when I had to start doing the cooking for my disabled wife was the cooking oil: I took an empty dish soap squeeze bottle, cleaned it out well, filled with oil from the big jug. I can grab, give a squirt in fry pan and put the bottle back on the shelf almost blindfolded. Very easy to get enough but not too much oil vs trying to get a "splash" from a large container or a non-squeeze container of any size.

Slightly off topic, apparently back in the 60's, the owner of Heineken came up with an idea to repackage his beer into bottles that could be repurposed into building bricks. He had visited the Caribbean and noticed his beer bottles contributed to the trashy conditions and thought this would be a great way to solve two problems - too much trash and a lack of affordable housing.

They made 100,000 bottles, enough for 10 houses, but his marketing team nixed the idea. The plan never made it to full production. I think he was ahead of his time with that idea.

That's what I do with chainsaw bar oil. Works great. I have a couple large dish soap bottles, that I fill from the larger 1 gallon jugs of bar oil.

Great minds think alike. Here is a catsup bottle with the cap off of a syrup bottle, its worked well for us over the last 2-3 years:

We have been buying our milk in the new style square gallon jugs and I cannot figure out how to pour it without seeming to spill more than I pour. There has to be a secret or method to pouring without spilling but I'm clueless about it.

Does anyone know the secret to pouring without spilling? :)

Use two hands.
