Relatively strict for the US here in MA (US is regulated mostly at the state level). You must take a safety course (which IMHO is a bit of a joke as it teaches very little), then apply for a license from your local police chief, which includes finger prints and background checks and then you get the license. The license can range from a right to own a gun (but not carry it) to a concealed carry permit. Purchases have to be made from licensed dealers in the state and firearms are registered at time of purchase and must be stored in special ways in your house or vehicle. Unfortunately the laws are very murky in some areas and enforced differently from town to town.
Here again, it is your state and if the people agree so be it -I am all about states rights. However this would never (we hope) happen in Texas.
