Have a 10 year old mini 14 in .223 Rem. Works flawlessly. Not the most accurate in the world, but good enough to 100+ yds which is all I wanted for woods varmints.
As other posters have noted, Ruger has recently upped their game on accuracy, likely due to competition from AR-15's. AR-15's were, and to some extent still are, too expensive for my liking compared to the mini 14.
From a reliability standpoint, it will serve you well. In my view, the synthetic stock / stainless barrel is butt-ugly, but eminently servicable in foul weather, so I bought that combo. This firearm is not a showpiece for me, unlike some of my others - it is a quick reaction multiple varmint exterminator.
Don't know about interchangable magazines, sorry. The factory stock 4 round clip is all I need.
