Yes he has had it worse then I have and I'm used to it. It helps if you have experience and have collected the equipment to see you through. Those people down in Georgia would muddle through just fine if they had seen it more then once or twice in a lifetime.

I was able to get to our North farm on Thursday, but it had drifted so bad over the night the roads were completely impassable Friday morning. Headed North the road was drifted in 4' deep for about a 1/2mi, and 3' deep headed south for 1/4mi. I tried in vain to get a running start in my 4runner and make it out headed South

What part of SW VA are you at? I hear you guys had been light on snow so far this season. Looks like you definitely caught up and then some!

Were right in the Blue Ridge mountains in Floyd county, elevation at my house is 2600'. This is the first meaningful snow of the year, with had a little 2" dusting a few weeks ago but that's about it. It had been terribly cold though, we had lows of -7* a few nights and highs in the single digits.

Indeed. Here in the mountains we are used to a fair bit of snow, but not so much so quick. About the only thing I wish I had were more sets of tire chains, which I'll be buying soon (which will guarantee we won't get anymore snow :laughing

VDOT does have some pretty impressive snow removal equipment around here. I've seen a huge Oshkosh snow blower (looks like a huge 2-ton truck with 4wd and two engines), a Unimog with a V-plow, some big all-wheel drive graders with V-plows and numerous 90+ hp 4wd cab tractors with plows and payloaders. The problem is that they have farmed out most of the snow removal to local contractors who are under-equipped and over eager. One of the trucks abandon on our road actually belonged to the contractor who was doing the snow removal (same folks who got their grader stuck). I think VDOT has ended up doing most of the heavy work on this snow, probably still a lot more to go. Some of the roads here are in extremely steep and remote areas which makes getting them clear is going to be tough.



I actually grew up in central NC about an hour from Raleigh and it sounds like they had a big mess on their hands. I remember the winter of 2000 we had about 15" of snow there and absolutely everything ground to a halt. We had to plow the road ourselves about 5mi out to the highway to get out. It was almost a week before a DOT plow came through. And to add insult ton injury, a number of the roads around there were just red dirt roads, so when everything thawed out the mud was horrendous. I remember my school bus trying to make it down one of those dirt roads after the thaw and got hopelessly mired, then the tow truck got mired. It was only a couple miles home so I just walked from there, lol.

Nothing like the right equipment to improve my attitude. :laughing:

I really hate to tackle some job with the wrong tools, knowing that there are tools that would do it 10x faster and better.

And another storm is on the way. At least only around 6 inches this time. I will have to start using the bucket to knock down the banks. With the drifts I get some of the banks are 8 feet tall.

In the downeast area here in Maine we got a good 15+ and we have more on it's way tonight 4-6" . I'm having way to much seat time pla... I mean working that is . I think I've got all the driveways done in sight ,and made a BIG pile of snow for the boy's next door with steps and three nice ramps to slid down that I made with the bucket, happy happy kids !!
I'll be doing some shoveling today at work for all the play time yesterday fun I had (I mean work )
It's times like this I remind myself why I got a cab tractor .
By the way ..It really does make quit a bit of diff. adding weight on the 3pt when pushing snow , even though my winch only weighs 3-4 hundred pounds. Be safe !

Well I have been complaining about the plow on this B2320 and how it hasn't been doing a very good job. Well just in time for the 28" total we received over the last 2 weeks, I have the feet set just right and it works beautiful now.

But then I was so eager to push it all into the creek, that it swallowed my tractor. The wife and the 4runner needed something to do too





!
