What is a stinger?

I am going to keep the winch in mine. I am going to get a tool bag and keep my straps in it. My chains are the ones from lowes that come in their own bag. I'll put them and the binders in the box when I need them.

Ball mount..Different vernacular I guess..

   / Trailer Tongue Box #23
I never heard it called that before.

There was a grammar argument on this site a year ago or so about this..Some areas call it a stinger some don't...Seems the vernacular changes by region.....Common term here, but not so much in other areas. Is there a common term? I hate linguistic gymnastics anyway, I'm of a single syllable kind of guy.

I have noticed people in my area call some implements by a different name than what people on here do. I call the ball mount a stinger from now on just to confuse people I know.

One thing you guys all need is a bottle jack and a folding 4 way lug wrench. I get called out 4 or so times a year to help with a flat. Many times the trucks lug wrench and jack will just not work. Get both at HF or Walmart for under $30.

So what was wrong with the box? I have an aluminum tradesman box, believe I paid about $100 for it from Amazon 2 years ago. No problems with it so far. When installing, I remember looking over the welds and thinking they had done a good job.

I keep a bottle jack in my little trailers box. I put a bottle jack in the truck when I use the car trailer. I have a tool set I keep in the truck that I could use change the flat. Something else that is good to carry with a car trailer is blocks to put underneath the back of the trailer to keep from picking the truck up off the ground.

It would be easier to tell what is right with the box. The biggest issue is the lid. It has a 1/4'' gap on one side and over 1'' on the other, it does not seal. At first I thought they did not have it centered but the lid is just made wrong. Some of the rivets that hold the hinge on are loose. Nothing is square on the box. You can lay a angle finder on the side of the box and move it to the lid and they are different. The handle that opens the box is crooked. There is paint or powdercoat chipped is off the lid in a couple of places. Both sides of the box have bulges in them. If I put it on my trailer everyone would think got the trucks bumper into the box and messed it up. Worst of all the box has a big decal on the inside of the lid that says "Proudly made in the USA". If they would have used some pride when they built the box it would be a nice box. I sat it on the trailer and it fit the trailer nicely. It is a shame it is not constructed properly.

That's really sad...You gotta figure that they have jigs and some degree of specs to build the box...Granted I can't mass produce them, but I can do better than what you described...Made in the USA---I'd have left that part out if I were the manufacturer along with my brand name if it's as bad as you state..And I believe you. Sadly.

This box was made my by Tradesman, a Lund company. I should have taken some pictures of it before I boxed it up. My $60 Harbor freight box is better than this box. The worst thing about the Harbor Freight box is you can open it with it locked.

Galvanized and surge brakes. I like it. Are they drum or disc brakes? I converted my two drum brake trailers to disc and they are night and day better. So easy to sevice, no adjusting, idler hubs, ect. I will never own anthing again with drums.

They are drums. I do agree that disc brakes works great but I never had problem with the drum brakes yet. The trick is to make sure you have them well adjusted to eliminate the back lash when braking. The boat that you see in the back have the disc brakes.

Yea, I have serviced boat trailers since 1992 as a part time jobs. I have probably done over 500 drum/shoe/bearing jobs.

Amazon is on the ball. The box was dropped off at the UPS store this morning and they already gave me a refund.

I have been thinking about doing something like that since I saw bubbacause77's trailer rebuild thread. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/trailers-transportation/292956-trailer-rebuild-summer-i-will-2.html Harbor freight has some jacks for under $30 that I have had my eye on.

That is a nice box especially for the money.

Are all trailer disk brakes hydraulic?

   / Trailer Tongue Box #39
Are all trailer disk brakes hydraulic?

No, some are electric. They are actuated by the brake controller in the tow vehicle which in turn powers a trailer mounted hydraulic power pack that in turn actuates the brakes. The system is called a electric over hydraulic system.

For my dual axle trailer, I don't carry a jack, but do carry a trapezoid block of wood. If I get a flat on one side, I can drive the good wheel onto the block and change the flat.

That box sounds awful -- seems like they really let a piece of crap out of the factory, or something went really wrong. My Tradesman box doesn't have any of those issues. Either I got real lucky, or you got real unlucky!

I believe Northern Tool sells Tradesman boxes as well. If you can't find an alternate brand to buy, you might be able to look at them at Northern to get another idea about the typical quality.
